Correlation of Water Level Variations with Wave Forces on a Vertical Pile for Non-periodic Waves
Author: B. J. Muga

Pages : 62
Book Description
Filter techniques employing Fourier transforms as evolved by Reid (Proc. of 6th Conf. on Coastal Engineering, 1958) are used to study measurements of hurricane generated waves and forces induced thereby on ver ical circular piles 2, 3, and 4 feet in diameter. The piles were fixed to an oil well drilling platform located in about 30 feet of water in the open Gulf of Mexico approximately 100 air miles south of New Orleans, La. It is concluded that the ''filter'' technique while possibly not suitable for design seems useful for analysis of measurements but that results obtained thereby cannot be compared rigorously with those from ''bump-counting'' techniques since their premises differ in that the former considers a ''train'' of ''waves'' while the latter considers a ''wave'' (bump) in a ''train.'' Comparison of the ''filter'' and ''bump-counting'' techniques, through a medium more sophisticated than that of the results yielded by each technique operating on a limited amount of data, is beyond the scope of this task.
