It covers the period from March until July of 1900. His work chronicled the advance of General Roberts' field army from Bloemfontein to Johannesburg and Pretoria. It includes his first hand experiences during the virtually every engagement that Ian Hamilton's wing of the army engaged in.Thomas Hugh Colville Frankland is given full authorship credit for his journal excerpts that were included in the original publication under the title, "Held By the Enemy".The work has also been augmented with additional contemporary newspaper and personal accounts of the same events by his compatriots during the campaign. Additions to the text include an epilogue chronicling Churchill's election to Parliament and his American speaking tour as well as other family information. Battle summaries of significant engagements have also been added.The compilation of these works, their annotation, illustration, and expansion with additional authored material were undertaken by Payton Fireman, JD.
