Author: Simon Glustrom
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1462830102
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 286
Book Description
Before packing away his robes, Simon Glustrom was a practicing rabbi for forty-three years. One of the compelling reasons for deciding to write a memoir was in response to the endless variety of questions about the interior life of a rabbi: Who influenced him to enter the rabbinate? Can a rabbi have religious doubts and still be true to his calling? Would he repeat such a rigorous life if he knew from the beginning the demands that would be made upon him? This book provides the reader with some uncommon answers. The author does not hesitate to reveal some of his lingering doubts, regrets and fears even as he refers with pride to his skills and strengths. Rabbi Glustrom reaches back to his early youth in Atlanta. He recalls some of the unheralded personalities who influenced him during his most impressionable years and impacted on his life in college, in rabbinical school and in the broader community. The author feels the need to sing on behalf of his unsung heroes. Much of this memoir deals with the human and spiritual problems the author encountered in a new suburban congregation in Fair Lawn, New Jersey where he served as the first rabbi. Nostalgically he recalls those pioneering years in the Fifties and documents some of the monumental changes that took place over four decades, including some of the unresolved crises, such as the problem of egalitarianism in synagogue life. Clergy and lay people will identify with much of the rich anecdotal material, from the humorous to the pathetic, that is so candidly expressed in this memoir.

Ten Men
Author: Kitty Ruskin
Publisher: Icon Books
ISBN: 1837730709
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 217
Book Description
A Stylist pick of the best non-fiction for 2024 TEN MEN, MANY STORIES. At the beginning of the year, Kitty Ruskin decided it was time to embrace her sexuality, taking advantage of all the joys that being young, free and single bring and having fun, easy, no-strings sex with whomsoever she desired. She got on the apps and started swiping. What followed was sometimes sexy, frequently funny, occasionally shocking and, sadly, all too often fraught with pain and danger. It was not the carefree adventure she had envisaged; it was something altogether darker. Ten Men is one woman's tale told with searing honesty. It's an exploration of the 'blurred lines' that even seemingly nice guys can exploit, a meditation on the lack of clarity around consent and a call to arms to combat a culture that seems to thrive on women's vulnerability.

Krasnoslava Tsarinovna is the second-most powerful woman in Zem’. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have a lot of power. Krasnoslava (Slava to her friends, if she had any) is the younger sister to the Empress of Zem’. She lives in luxury in her sister’s kremlin, eats at her sister’s rich feasts, and sits on her sister’s council. She has everything any woman could want—except respect. Instead, she is the bearer of her family’s double-edged gifts of clairvoyance and empathy. Knowing what other people feel about you is difficult at the best of times. In the Imperial court, it’s torture. When an adventurer comes asking for Imperial support to explore the Midnight Land, the far North where the sun never rises all winter, Slava is so desperate to leave the kremlin that she asks to come with her. To her surprise, her request is granted. Slava’s journey is supposed to take her to the very edge of Zem’ and the Known World, and maybe help her learn more about her gifts. But as she travels North, she finds herself drawn into the center of a plot that could bring down her family. Slava would do anything to protect her family—except what the gods call upon her to do. Everyone has always considered Slava a coward. Will she learn to become a hero in order to save the people she loves? This high fantasy saga set in a magical Slavic world infused with Russian myths and fairy tales contains elements of metaphysical and visionary fantasy, ecofiction/ecofantasy, noblebright (or maybe a touch of nobledark), and hopepunk.
