Vera was an extraordinary woman, mother, and wife. We explored many countries, cities, and states such as Holland, Eindhoven, New York, South Carolina, Miami, Curaçao, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, London. Settling down was never easy for me, but she made it work for us; it was a blessing. In London, she started her own personal journey to add more meaning to her life. She became a member of a parent group and then became a lollipop lady who was loved by everyone. She later endeavored on becoming a teaching assistant for age groups ranging from nursery to year 6 at Blessed Dominic Catholic Primary School. She successfully worked there until she became ill. In memory of a wonderful journey with Veneranda “Vera” Pallara, I would like to share with you a chapter in Vera’s life that I can say I have had the privilege, honor, and joy to have had experienced with her and our kids—Sarah, Jacob, and Joy. Like a true champion, she ran a race with us in this world. Now she has passed her baton over to us to continue her legacy, and so we shall in God’s grace. Vera departed on August 23, 2018, and so I say, “Eternal rest, grant her, Lord. Shine your perpetual light upon her. My aim was to explain in detail the facts surrounding Fascist anti-Semitism and the persecution of the Jews in Mussolini's Italy. Too many people in Italy and elsewhere underestimate or deny the tragic fate of European Jewry and anti-Semitism between the two world wars. A few short years ago anti-Semitism appeared defeated and reduced to a tiny group of fanatics. But now it seems to be regaining ground in its more political incarnation, probably the most dangerous one, because next to the religious, social and economic varieties it is the most insidious of all. The author occupies a central position among Italian historians specialized in modern Italy's political history. He broke new ground by first publishing this book in 1961 having obtained special permission to consult the files in the Archives of the Italian Jewish Communities concerning the Fascist regime's persecution of the Jews in Italy from 1938 to 1945. The book's release coincided with the trial of Adolf Eichmann in Jerusalem that brought the Holocaust to the attention of other historians and to the world public. The English translation of the final 1993 edition was supported by a grant from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This paperback and electronic book edition is published in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

On the Other Shore explores the social history of Italian communities in South America and the transnational networks in which they were situated during and after World War I. From 1915 to 1921 Italy’s conflict against Austria-Hungary and its aftermath shook Italian immigrants and their children in the metropolitan areas of Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and São Paulo. The war led portions of these communities to mobilize resources—patriotic support, young men who could enlist in the Italian army, goods like wool from Argentina and limes from Brazil, and lots of money—to support Italy in the face of “total war.” Yet other portions of these communities simultaneously organized a strident movement against the war, inspired especially by anarchism and revolutionary socialism. Both of these factions sought to extend their influence and ambitions into the immediate postwar period. On the Other Shore demonstrates patterns of social cohesion and division within the Italian communities of South America; reconstructs varying transatlantic and inter-American networks of interaction, exchange, and mobility in an “Italian Atlantic”; interrogates how authorities in Italy viewed their South American “colonies”; and uncovers ways that Italians in Latin America balanced and blended relationships and loyalties to their countries of residence and origin. On the Other Shore’s position at the intersection of Latin American history, Atlantic history, and the histories of World War I and Italian immigration thereby engages with and informs each of these subject areas in distinctive ways.
