Exile and Return as Poetics of Identity in Contemporary Anglo-Caribbean Literature
Author: Eleonora Natalia Ravizza
Publisher: Cambridge Scholars Publishing
ISBN: 1527543889
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 229
Book Description
In contemporary Anglo-Caribbean literature, the dialectic interrelations of “exile” and “return” are essential for conveying meta-reflections on literature and language, as well as the role they play in the construction of personal and collective identities. While this volume focuses on the specificity of a cultural area whose history is marked by colonialism, diaspora, slavery and racial conflicts, it also raises epistemological questions surrounding the complexity of literature, and its function in a world which is ever more composite, hybrid and transcultural. By developing a new, systematic approach which combines post-colonial studies, theories of intertextuality and philosophy of language, it explores how contemporary literary texts reflect, elaborate and redefine the experiences of societies that are currently dealing with ever-growing global interdependencies and newly-formed cultural and semiotic context.

Food and Women in Italian Literature, Culture and Society
Author: Claudia Bernardi
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 1350137804
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 289
Book Description
This book explores how women's relationship with food has been represented in Italian literature, cinema, scientific writings and other forms of cultural expression from the 19th century to the present. Italian women have often been portrayed cooking and serving meals to others, while denying themselves the pleasure of the table. The collection presents a comprehensive understanding of the symbolic meanings associated with food and of the way these intersect with Italian women's socio-cultural history and the feminist movement. From case studies on Sophia Loren and Elena Ferrante, to analyses of cookbooks by Italian chefs, each chapter examines the unique contribution Italian culture has made to perceiving and portraying women in a specific relation to food, addressing issues of gender, identity and politics of the body.

Itinerari di storia sociale dell’educazione occidentale - Volume Secondo
Author: Rita Minello
Publisher: Edizioni Nuova Cultura
ISBN: 8868121913
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 194
Book Description

Imaging Humanity
Author: John Casey
Publisher: Bordighera Press
ISBN:
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
Cultural Writing. A collection of papers presented at the IMAGING HUMANITY conference, held at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, Italy on April 22 and 23, 1999. The interdisciplinary conference, conceived to examine the notions of humans as both creators and creatures of images, promoted interdisciplinary dialogue and probed the meaning of a liberal arts education at the graduate level. Over the course of the conference sessions, which explored the notion of image in textual, philosophical, and political contexts, participants from Germany, Italy, and the United States presented papers on topics ranging from modern art to medieval manuscripts, from contemporary politics to nineteenth-century aesthetic theory. At the center of each of these presentations was a fundamental concern with the nature and function of image. Editors include Jim Whelton and Anne Wingenter.
