Book Description
Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

In the Light of Darkness

In the Light of Darkness PDF Author: Butchie
Publisher: Dorrance Publishing
ISBN: 1434988813
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 80

Book Description
This book/journal, which is entitled In the Light of Darkness, is based on the author’s personal journey through deep depression, darkness, despair, hopelessness, suicide and back because of a lifetime of bipolar depression and eighteen years of sibling violence (domestic violence) in his home. Along with the bipolar depression, because of the abuse, he was also diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. Oftentimes, there is a direct correlation between the two, mirror images of each other. Both of these social stigmas are largely overlooked—and this book was written to bring about and raise awareness concerning these toxic taboos, which have been hush-hush and swept under the rug of our social consciousness for far too long. You may not always see the bruises or signs of deep, dark depression, but look closer, listen, and talk to people who are suffering. Show them you truly care and love them and that you are there for them no matter what they are going through because they matter. Let’s stop the madness. Tell someone and/or seek professional help. This book is Wade Robinson’s story and is an intriguing, in-depth, dark journey through life and death.

Sacrifice, Captivity and Escape

Sacrifice, Captivity and Escape PDF Author: Peter Jackson
Publisher: Pen and Sword
ISBN: 1848848358
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 205

Book Description
Sacrifice, Captivity and Escape is an exceptional story. Peter Jackson was young and recently married when he was drafted into the army at the start of World War II. He had no wish to be there but like most of his generation he was given no choice. Peter arrived in Singapore just as the city was being evacuated and within days he was a prisoner of the Imperial Japanese Army. Peter was one of the very few to survive the hardship, illnesses and brutality that followed. Like so many he was forced to work for the Japanese, first in Singapore and then on the infamous Thai-Burma railway. While there, remarkably, he escaped with seven other soldiers and, when recaptured, he was treated harshly. His memoir brings alive the characters of his comrades and also of the Japanese who he encountered. Some of the Japanese treated their prisoners humanely and Peter was able to form a relationship with them but others were sadistic psychopaths. But throughout his memoir there is a sense of hopefulness that, as young men, they would survive and get back to their homes; this was despite the despair many of them felt at losing four years of their lives as prisoners.
