Memoirs of a High School Counselor

Memoirs of a High School Counselor PDF Author: Jim Mancke
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1512792594
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 126

Book Description
Imagine beginning your thirty-six-year high school counseling career by returning to your former high school, your alma mater, still being rememberedfor better or for worseby many of your past teachers and some staff members. That is where Jim Mancke found himself in the fall of 1975. With his undergraduate degree in psychology, a three-year stint in the Military Police Corps, and a masters degree in secondary school counseling, he felt relatively well prepared for the task ahead. Little did he know how little he did know! While his heart was open to serving the adolescent community, he quickly discovered he had much yet to learn. Interestingly, it would be his students and their parents who would prove to be his teachers and he their pupil. The lessons he learned are what this book is about. His first nineteen years of service (he preferred to call this his ministry) were at Spartanburg High School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He then answered a call to serve in a private (independent) school setting in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at the McCallie School, which offered both day and boarding options. The boarding component of McCallie added a new dimension to his counseling model. He served there for seventeen years. Both schools proved to be fertile ground for the lessons he learned. While Jim was honored to be the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions throughout his counseling ministry, two proved to be extra special. In 1991 he received the distinguished Lewis Hine Award from the National Child Labor Committee in New York, presented for unparalleled achievement in service to children and youth. In 1993 Governor Carroll Campbell of South Carolina presented Jim the states highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, for his interest in and friendship to the state of South Carolina and her people. As his memoirs attest, Jims greatest honor was that of serving his students and their parents.

Book Description
"It seems like everyone else has the script. Everyone else knows what's happening and I look around and say, Duh." Of course, the truth is that no one has the script because there is no script to follow. This brand-new, completely updated and revised edition of Changing Bodies, Changing Lives is full of honest, accurate, nonjudgmental information on everything teenagers need to know about today. Am I the only one who can't get up the nerve to ask someone out? got my period so early? doesn't even know the right way to kiss? feels pressured to use drugs? still hasn't hit puberty yet? wants to avoid the gang scene? worries when my mom doesn't come home at night? is scared that I might have AIDS? can't decide what form of birth control to use? has no idea how to tell my friends I'm gay? goes on eating binges? has never had an orgasm? is shut out of the popular crowd? Changing Bodies, Changing Lives has helped hundreds of thousands of teenagers make informed decisions about their lives, from questions about sex, love, friendship, and how your body works to dealing with problems at school and home and figuring out who you are. It's packed with illustrations, checklists, and resources for the answers you really need. Best of all, it's filled with the voices, poems, and cartoons from hundreds of other teenagers, who tell you what makes them feel worried, angry, confused, sexy, happy, and, yes, even excited and hopeful about their lives. With the information and the ideas inside this book, you'll have what you need to make these years the best they can be.

Emerging and Young Adulthood

Emerging and Young Adulthood PDF Author: Varda Konstam
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319113011
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
The most distinctive feature of the Second Edition is its theoretical orientation coupled with a focus on understanding emerging and young adulthood from multiple perspectives. The updated and expanded book offers readers an opportunity to “listen to the voices” of emerging and young adults, parents, and employers, which is key to understanding this particular developmental period. In addition, the case studies provided throughout the book are diverse and detailed. The issues of emerging adulthood are complicated, nuanced, and defy easy characterizations. This book provides an opportunity to debunk many established pernicious stereotypes about emerging and young adults. The presentation of diverse voices and case material serves as a springboard for discussion and engages readers with material depicting emerging adults in the throes of working through developmental challenges characteristic of this period. In addition, the recent economic downturn has created havoc and further instability in the lives of emerging and young adults. The Second Edition focuses on the effects of – as well as possible solutions to – unemployment on emerging and young adults. A new chapter focuses on career experimentation versus career floundering, which is an important distinction. Additional new chapters address the effects of technology as well as depression and anxiety on emerging and young adults. The Second Edition examines emerging and young adulthood within a larger developmental and ecological context. In addition, it ensures that readers are well positioned to understand how the developmental demands of this period intersect with current economic, social, and political realities. It is a must-have resource for developmental, clinical child and school psychologists, rehabilitation counselors and therapists, I/O psychologists, and sociologists as well as for researchers and graduate-level students across these various disciplines.
