Hypocrisy Discovered in its Nature and Workings PDF Author: Cuthbert Sydenham
Publisher: Puritan Publications
ISBN: 1938721721

Pages : 173

Book Description
This work on hypocrisy is one of the best puritan treatments of the subject. In seven sermons Sydenham opens the words of Christ in Luke 12:1, “Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.” He shows that hypocrisy is the chief enemy of the Gospel, as the Pharisees where the chief enemies of Christ. He also demonstrates that not everyone who is hypocritical is a hypocrite, and there are specific dividing lines that cause a person to be on one side or the other. These he explores with a pastoral heart and theological treatment of the subject. This work will either awaken the hypocrite to rightly examining himself through dissecting what hypocrisy truly is, or it will help the Christian to guard against types of hypocrisy that may be ready to overtake him. This is a valuable work centering on resting on the power of Jesus Christ to overcome sin and glorify God. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

In his brief, introductory biography, Adam Embry discusses Flavel’s background, ministry, and theology of keeping the heart, which, for Flavel, “is the great business of a Christian’s life.” Centuries ago, Flavel wrote, “Above all other studies in the world, study your own hearts.” Embry guides us through forty-two short passages from Flavel’s writings that acquaint us with this dedicated Puritan minister’s piety and help us see the importance of this great business of keeping and managing our hearts. Table of Contents: Section One: Christ Rules the Heart Section Two: Keeping the Heart Section Three: Seasons of the Heart Section Four: Discerning the Heart Series Description Seeking, then, both to honor the past and yet not idolize it, we are issuing these books in the series Profiles in Reformed Spirituality . The design is to introduce the spirituality and piety of the Reformed Profiles in Reformed Spirituality tradition by presenting descriptions of the lives of notable Christians with select passages from their works. This combination of biographical sketches and collected portions from primary sources gives a taste of the subjects’ contributions to our spiritual heritage and some direction as to how the reader can find further edification through their works. It is the hope of the publishers that this series will provide riches for those areas where we are poor and light of day where we are stumbling in the deepening twilight.

On the Edge of Truth and Honesty: Principles and Strategies of Fraud and Deceit in the Early Modern Period

On the Edge of Truth and Honesty: Principles and Strategies of Fraud and Deceit in the Early Modern Period PDF Author:
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004475923
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
In the early modern period, deceit and fraud were common issues. Acutely aware of the ubiquity and multiplicity of simulation and dissimulation, people from this period made serious efforts to gain a better understanding of the phenomenon, trying to distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable, pleasant and unpleasant, wicked and virtuous forms of deceit, and seeking to unravel its principles, strategies, and functions. The twelve case-studies in this volume focus on the use of deceit by several groups of people in different spheres of life, as well as on its representation in literary and artistic genres, and its conceptualization in philosophical and rhetorical discourses. The studies testify to the rich variety of deceitful strategies applied by people from the early modern period, as well as to the subtlety and diversity of the conceptual frameworks they construed in order to grasp the many aspects of the elusive yet all-pervasive phenomenon of deceit. Contributors include: Daniel Acke, Jacques Bos, Wiep van Bunge, Evelien Chayes, Paul J.C.M. Franssen, Paul van Heck, Toon van Houdt, Alfons K.L. Thijs, Bert Timmermans, Johannes Trapman, Mark van Vaeck, Natascha Veldhorst, and Johan Verberckmoes.

Book Description
""But leaving the treatise to speak for itself, we beseech the man who is but almost a Christian, in traveling through its pages to avail himself of its aid. We ask him simply, to reason the matter on the principles and findings which it sets before him; but to do this in that spirit of earnest and humble inquisitiveness, which befits so grave a subject: and if such a spirit be far from him, or appearing to evaporate as he proceeds, let him pause and invoke its return, from that God in Jesus Christ, who maketh the heart of the rash to understand doctrine. As be wishes to prosper, let him never forget, that while it is easy to show him the proper means, and possible to bring him into contact with these, yet the disposition to apply the means in such a way, as to gain their end, cometh forth from Him, who is wonderful in counsel and excellent in working.""

Why Everyone (Else) Is a Hypocrite

Why Everyone (Else) Is a Hypocrite PDF Author: Robert Kurzban
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691154392
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
The evolutionary psychology behind human inconsistency We're all hypocrites. Why? Hypocrisy is the natural state of the human mind. Robert Kurzban shows us that the key to understanding our behavioral inconsistencies lies in understanding the mind's design. The human mind consists of many specialized units designed by the process of evolution by natural selection. While these modules sometimes work together seamlessly, they don't always, resulting in impossibly contradictory beliefs, vacillations between patience and impulsiveness, violations of our supposed moral principles, and overinflated views of ourselves. This modular, evolutionary psychological view of the mind undermines deeply held intuitions about ourselves, as well as a range of scientific theories that require a "self" with consistent beliefs and preferences. Modularity suggests that there is no "I." Instead, each of us is a contentious "we"--a collection of discrete but interacting systems whose constant conflicts shape our interactions with one another and our experience of the world. In clear language, full of wit and rich in examples, Kurzban explains the roots and implications of our inconsistent minds, and why it is perfectly natural to believe that everyone else is a hypocrite.
