Book Description
This 2018 Article IV Consultation highlights that the headline inflation in Hungary has started to pick up, mainly owing to higher energy prices, while core inflation has been running sideways over the past six months, despite emerging capacity constraints. Unemployment remains on a decreasing trend, and labor shortages are intensifying despite the improvement in participation rates. The 2017 general government fiscal deficit narrowed to 2 percent of GDP, compared with the budgeted 2.4 percent. This outcome was mostly driven by strong GDP growth and reduced interest payments. The IMF staff projects the 2018 overall fiscal deficit at about 2.4 percent of GDP, in line with the budget’s target.

Book Description
This 2005 Article IV Consultation highlights that recent accession to the European Union and gains in growth performance reinforced the Czech Republic’s position as one of the most open and developed economies among the new member states. Thanks to substantial foreign direct investment, its manufacturing sector is closely integrated into cross-border production networks, and foreign-owned firms now account for most of industrial exports. Banking sector indicators are positive, and bank lending—led by credit to households—continue to rebound. Past restructuring and improved risk management have also strengthened banks.

Pages : 47
Book Description
The Article IV Consultation highlights the financial system risks that have increased reflecting both the global financial market turbulence and continued rapid credit growth in Hungary. With most new borrowing in foreign currency, the private sector’s net foreign currency liabilities increased. Monetary policy has been appropriately tightened, and the elimination of the exchange rate band has removed a potential conflict between monetary policy objectives. Executive Directors called for enhanced collaboration with foreign supervisory authorities given Hungarian banks’ close links with financial institutions abroad.

Book Description
This 2005 Article IV Consultation highlights that the economic recovery in Mexico that began in mid-2003 has continued in 2005, though at a slower pace. A broad-based expansion of economic activity in 2004, driven by a rebound of private consumption and private investment, took growth up to 4.4 percent. The fiscal accounts improved in 2004 on the strength of rising oil revenues and restraint of current expenditures, and the authorities achieved their target for the traditional deficit of 0.3 percent of GDP.

Global Waves of Debt
Author: M. Ayhan Kose
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 1464815453
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 403
Book Description
The global economy has experienced four waves of rapid debt accumulation over the past 50 years. The first three debt waves ended with financial crises in many emerging market and developing economies. During the current wave, which started in 2010, the increase in debt in these economies has already been larger, faster, and broader-based than in the previous three waves. Current low interest rates mitigate some of the risks associated with high debt. However, emerging market and developing economies are also confronted by weak growth prospects, mounting vulnerabilities, and elevated global risks. A menu of policy options is available to reduce the likelihood that the current debt wave will end in crisis and, if crises do take place, will alleviate their impact.

Category : Business & Economics

Book Description
This 2015 Article IV Consultation highlights that the Hungarian economy is growing at a strong pace helped by accommodative macroeconomic policies and improved market sentiment. Driven by strong domestic demand, output grew by 3.6 percent in 2014. Unemployment declined sharply reflecting the expansion of public works programs and job creation in the private sector. Headline and core inflation decelerated sharply, and inflation expectations fell below the National Bank of Hungary’s inflation target. Going forward, output growth is projected to decelerate to 2.75 percent in 2015, on account of a smaller domestic-demand impetus owing to less-supportive fiscal stance and lower investment growth.

Book Description
The staff report for the 2005 Article IV Consultation on the Republic of Latvia highlights the economic outlook and mid-term risks. A sound policy framework and far-reaching structural reforms supported this performance, including a prudent fiscal policy that underpinned the exchange rate peg. The ongoing credit boom and faster real wage growth are expected to support private domestic demand while a sharp increase in net European Union (EU) grants would also boost public spending. Efficiently allocating EU funds for infrastructure was seen as a key element of a framework for promoting efficient resource allocation.
