Hidden History of Cumberland County

Hidden History of Cumberland County PDF Author: Joseph David Cress
Publisher: Arcadia Publishing
ISBN: 1625840586
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 159

Book Description
The rolling fields and quiet towns of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, belie its dynamic history. From slaves who escaped to freedom through Underground Railroad stations in Shippensburg and Boiling Springs to a telephone-like invention created by Lower Allen's Daniel Drawbaugh a full decade before the patent of Alexander Graham Bell, the pages of Cumberland County's history conceal long-forgotten but true tales. There are numerous but often-overlooked contributions from county residents--from 1920 to 1923, Newville hosted the first state police academy in the nation, and during World War II, a humble bandage invented in Carlisle saved countless lives. With an engaging collection of vignettes, author Joseph David Cress explores these and other hidden tales from the history of Cumberland County.

Tracing Emfs in Building Wiring and Grounding

Tracing Emfs in Building Wiring and Grounding PDF Author: Karl Riley
Publisher: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
ISBN: 9781469902012
Category : Electric currents
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
A link between power line magnetic fields and childhood leukemia was revealed in a 1979 health study. More studies in the U.S. and Europe supported these findings, including links to other diseases. But when careful measurements were made in schools, offices and residences it was found that most high magnetic fields in buildings were caused by certain common wiring errors, as well as by electric currents on water pipes due to grounding practices. Karl Riley pioneered a successful method of tracing high magnetic fields to the site of the error. A simple correction clears the field. Though his clients in 17 states may see him as an electrical Sherlock Holmes, he follows a simple, logical measurement sequence which leads him inevitably to the spot where the error was made. Correction is simple and obvious. His entire diagnostic method is spelled out in this book, for the use of electricians or technically inclined home owners.

Governing Arctic Change

Governing Arctic Change PDF Author: Kathrin Keil
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 1137508841
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
This volume explores the governance of the transforming Arctic from an international perspective. Leading and emerging scholars in Arctic research investigate the international causes and consequences of contemporary Arctic developments, and assess how both state and non-state actors respond to crucial problems for the global community. Long treated as a remote and isolated region, climate change and economic prospects have put the Arctic at the forefront of political agendas from the local to the global level, and this book tackles the variety of involved actors, institutional politics, relevant policy issues, as well as political imaginaries related to a globalizing Arctic. It covers new institutional forms of various stakeholder engagement on multiple levels, governance strategies to combat climate change that affect the Arctic region sooner and more strongly than other regions, the pros and cons of Arctic resource development for the region and beyond, and local and trans-boundary pollution concerns. Given the growing relevance of the Arctic to international environmental, energy and security politics, the volume helps to explain how the region is governed in times of global nexuses, multi-level politics and multi-stakeholderism.
