Book Description
Twentysomething Izzy is fedup. She has split with boyfriend Cian, the dirty love cheat, and is sick of her job as a dogsbody at film company Lights, Camera, Action. If she was paid to write the script of her so-called life (working title: Welcome to Dumpsville) it would definitely not include: (1) Baggy tracksuit bottoms and dreadlocked hair (2) Her flatmate's ever-present lump of a boyfriend watching everlasting football matches on the living-room TV (3) Ill-advised booty calls (4) Panicky pregnancy tests (5) Bumping into Cian and his new squeeze, Brenda, while looking like something the cat spat up (see No.1) It definitely would include: (1) Sleek hair, sleek limbs (come to think of it, more-or-less sleek everything) (2) A Jaffa Cake-eating rabbit called Dermot (3) A foul-mouthed gran with a heart of gold (4) Jonathan-absolute-total-ride-Cunningham And, of course ... (5) A girl's best friend, Gavin. Since real life in Dumpsville is way weirder than anything she could make up, all Izzy can do is take a deep breath and hang in there . . . "We are the Mods"

Author: Christine Jacqueline Feldman
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9781433103698
Category : Art
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
"Drawing on archival research, oral history interviews, and participant observation, this examination of the adoption and adaptation of Mod style across geographic space also maps its various interpretations over time, from the early 1960s to the present. The book traces the Mod youth culture from its genesis in the dimly lit clubs of London's Soho. where it began as a way for young people to reconfigure modernity after the chaos of World War II, to its contemporary, country-specific expressions. By examining Mod culture in the United States, Germany, and Japan alongside the United Kingdom, "We Are the Mods" contrasts the postwar development of Mod in those countries that lost the war with those that won. The book illuminates the culture's fashion, music, iconography, and gender aesthetics, to create a compelling portrait of a transnational subculture." --Book Jacket.

Soundings

Soundings PDF Author: Augustine Martin
Publisher: Gill & Macmillan
ISBN: 9780717148417
Category : Poetry
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
Soundings was first published in 1969. It was intended as an 'interim' anthology of poetry for the Leaving Certificate until such time as a more permanent volume could be devised. Twenty six years later it was replaced. In the meantime it had passed through the hands of hundreds of thousands of students in Ireland. Soundings might have been replaced but it was never fully forgotten. Old copies ended up with an individual personality honed out of manual annotations and thoughts, not all of them provided by the teacher. Scrawls in biro or pencil testified to the thoughts and daydreams many users. A surprising number of copies ended up in attics only to be rediscovered with delight many years later and to be given treasured status in new homes. One former student recalled how Soundings was the first school book to treat her as an adult. It made no concessions to the 'teenager'. It didn't patronise. Its imagery was entirely in the poetry. The typography was appalling but the cover design still resonates. A decade after its demise, second hand copies of Soundings were fetching surprising prices. It was widely discussed in chat-rooms on the web. There were increasing demands for a reprint. So here is Soundings, in its original form just as you remember it. The same stony grey soil of Patrick Kavanagh's Monaghan; T.S.Eliot's same women who come and go talking of Michaelangelo. Please enjoy once more!
