When sombre hues embrown_ the leaf, And Autumn winds are here, When nights grow long, and days grow brief, And spring-birds disappear, -I love to court the forest lone, And be apart fiom men, To hear the winds of Autumn moan, And roam the dewy glen. There comes a voice from Nature then, 'Tis sad yet sweet to hear, And so I roam the forest when Nor fiiend nor foe is near: Not that I hate or fear mankind, Or would their presence shun, Bnt that I bear a troubled mind, And own a heart undone. With sighing winds and solemn shade Tis meet that I should dwell, And muse on my departed maid I loved, and loved so well: The busy haunts of bustling life My willing steps forsake, And go where sullen storms are rife, And wrathful spirits wake. It suits my soul, that Autumn storm, I hear the wailing gust, And think of her whose gentle form Lies sleeping in the dust; And while the mournful prospect round Attracts my pensive gaze, The dying leaves that strew the ground Are emblems of my days. My days that once a glory wore, And flushed full high with pride, When in the happy hours of yore She blossomed by my side; How beautiful, how good she was, 'T were idle now to say, And vain each meed of high applause Which I to her could pay. She lists not while of her I rave, And call her blessed name, ' She slumbers on within her grave, And heeds nor praise nor blame; The leaf detached from where it grew, In dark decay to rest, Is likeness of the sorrow, true, That rends my aching...
