Book Description
We as individuals can take steps and use strategies to keep ourselves, our loved ones, and our possessions safe from harm. Though the news today is filled with reports of ever more shocking crimes and frightening statistics, we need not be paralyzed by fear. This invaluable book gives you the privileged wisdom only a seasoned police officer possesses. Drawing on his twenty-five years of experience on the Indianapolis police force, Captain Snow provides us with the inside scoop on a wide variety of crimes. As Captain Snow shows, there is a great deal that we can do to protect ourselves from becoming victims of crime in the first place. Based on interviews with detectives across the country and on surveys and interviews with the criminals themselves, he explains the signs we unwittingly give off that make ourselves, our possessions, and our homes appealing targets to criminals. Captain Snow addresses the most essential questions for our security. As Captain Snow stresses, a bit of caution can go a long way - and knowing when and what to be on the lookout for can make the difference between safety and becoming another crime statistic.

Property Rights and the Constitution

Property Rights and the Constitution PDF Author: Dennis J. Coyle
Publisher: State University of New York Press
ISBN: 1438400004
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 406

Book Description
Controversies over public regulation of private land have dominated political agendas in recent years, especially at the local level. Land use and environmental regulation have reached unprecedented levels, and federal and state courts have garnered recent headlines by striking down regulations. Rights and regulations are on a collision course, and how they are reconciled will have a major impact on individuals, governments, and communities in the decades ahead. This book is the first systematic attempt to assess key constitutional developments in the land use field during the last decade in state and federal supreme courts. It highlights important trends, including the growing role of state supreme courts, attacks on regulation as exclusionary, and the emergence of the takings clause of the Fifth Amendment as a potentially major limitation on governmental power.

Protecting the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights

Protecting the right to freedom of expression under the European Convention on Human Rights PDF Author: Bychawska-Siniarska, Dominika
Publisher: Council of Europe
ISBN:
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 124

Book Description
European Convention on Human Rights – Article 10 – Freedom of expression 1. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. This right shall include freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart information and ideas without interference by public authority and regardless of frontiers. This article shall not prevent States from requiring the licensing of broadcasting, television or cinema enterprises. 2. The exercise of these freedoms, since it carries with it duties and responsibilities, may be subject to such formalities, conditions, restrictions or penalties as are prescribed by law and are necessary in a democratic society, in the interests of national security, territorial integrity or public safety, for the prevention of disorder or crime, for the protection of health or morals, for the protection of the reputation or rights of others, for preventing the disclosure of information received in confidence, or for maintaining the authority and impartiality of the judiciary. In the context of an effective democracy and respect for human rights mentioned in the Preamble to the European Convention on Human Rights, freedom of expression is not only important in its own right, but it also plays a central part in the protection of other rights under the Convention. Without a broad guarantee of the right to freedom of expression protected by independent and impartial courts, there is no free country, there is no democracy. This general proposition is undeniable. This handbook is a practical tool for legal professionals from Council of Europe member states who wish to strengthen their skills in applying the European Convention on Human Rights and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights in their daily work.
