Pay commences at 219 and rises to 401. Naval Chaplains acting as Naval Instructors receive half of this rate of pay in addition to their own. THE MEECHANT SERVICE. Age from 13 to 20, but there is no fixed or legal limit of age. Mode Of Entry. 1. As Midshipmen. This is the most expensive mode of entering the service, but one which saves the youth from much hard and menial work, and secures for him kind and considerate treatment. The premium varies according to the size, etc., of the ship. It may be roughly stated at from 50 to 150 guineas. 2. First Class Apprentices serve for from three to five years.
