Book Description
There is a paradoxical relationship between democracy and development in Nigeria. In the twenty years of electoral democracy, poverty, inequality, unemployment, underemployment and insecurity have increased. The hopes of citizens that democracy would lead to improved living standards have been dashed. Social justice and inclusive sustainable development have also been elusive. The economy has remained dependent on 2 primary sectors - agriculture and oil - and low value added services. The aspiration that by 2020, Nigeria would become one of the twenty leading economies in the world has not been achieved, the political elite have captured the state for personal gains and unsurprisingly, Nigeria remains one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

Book Description
I am an American Soldier, well trained, educated, nurtured and raised to be honest, to reduce waste, to do every project successfully at less cost and with military discipline and precision, to do what is right, legally and morally, and to unite and treat everyone, men and women, equally, fairly and justly. I am a Nigerian first and foremost. I am also an American citizen. I was born and raised in Ugborodo Village (where Chevron exploits crude oil), Delta State of Nigeria. I am the best Candidate for the Presidency of Nigeria in 2015 (with a woman as my Vice-President) because I have a vision to rescue Nigeria's economy, by investing heavily in science and technology with our oil money, establishing new universities, the equivalent of Harvard, Yale, MIT and Oxford or better, in the rural areas of Nigeria, to pull people from the congested cities to a more siren, natural environment in the rural areas, to establish a state-of-the-art science laboratory attached to these new universities in the rural areas, establish farm and manufacturing plant to be attached to every university in Nigeria, because everything taught in the new Nigerian schools, colleges and universities must have real life applications to the students, and most important, to establish a Federal and State agencies for the protection of the environment, from pollution and damage to our ecology and our environment, with strict enforcement and punitive measures for violators, because my leadership is going to protect Nigeria's fresh water (both underground water, surface water, etc), and establish beautiful National Parks all over the new Nigeria and under my leadership in the new Nigeria, the government is going to invest heavily in fresh water (as the next equivalent of crude oil) and export it to countries all over the world, as a major source of revenue. Also, by providing free education, the equivalent of the education at Harvard and Oxford universities, or better, for all Nigerians to get a professional degree or skill and to get free monthly allowance of $100-$500, plus free feeding and accommodations for all the students while in the university, (and three million naira for all new graduates to settle down in the New Nigeria) to share the oil wealth with all Nigerians by giving out grants of $2,500 to $6,500 to all Nigerians who cannot attend the university, to start a business and become self-reliant, to provide for all Nigerians with the oil wealth by giving monthly allowance of $100-$500 to all disabled people and all old people of 65 years and above with no source of income, to invest heavily in science, technology, agriculture, infrastructures, eliminate crime almost to zero level, by making everyone in the new Nigeria well educated and well taken care of financially, and placing so much emphasis on integrity, morality and ethics (that is, doing only what is excellent, doing what is right, legally and morally) and thereafter bring American big corporations, Chinese corporations and European corporations to outsource into Nigeria's economy with friendly rules and without any tax if they commit to help our economy, to develop the Nigerian economy to be on the same level with the United States in about four years with the help of Nigerians and with the help of some of the best engineers and scientists in the United States Army (where I am a member) and/or in the United States society, and thereby making Nigeria and the United States of America have unbreakable bonds, economically, politically, socially and otherwise.

How Megaprojects Are Damaging Nigeria and How to Fix It

How Megaprojects Are Damaging Nigeria and How to Fix It PDF Author: Jimoh Ibrahim
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3030964744
Category : Africa
Languages : en
Pages : 253

Book Description
Since 1960, two-thirds of very large governmental projects in Nigeria have not only failed, but been abandoned mid-course. This presents a bigger failure rate than mega projects elsewhere, and yet there is no available data or analysis to help us understand the reasons behind such failures. This book provides an authoritative examination into why very large projects in Nigeria have failed so badly, and provides practical recommendations on how the Nigerian government can improve its project performance. Drawing on data from 38 very large projects (19 completed and 19 abandoned) with a total budget of over $25B, this book presents detailed analysis of these projects and in-depth case studies 11 of the projects, and presents lessons for improvement. Through this, the authors have identified a small number of key success drivers, and argue that making moderate improvements on any of them would, on average, save hundreds of millions of dollars on one large project alone. This open access book is a game-changer in the management of government mega projects in Nigeria. With clear implications for other developing economies, this is a vital resource for project management practitioners, executives and civil servants. Jimoh Ibrahim is a prominent businessman in Nigeria. He is also currently completing his Business Doctorate degree at the University of Cambridge, Judge Business School, and he is working on establishing a new University in Nigeria. Christoph Loch is Professor of Operations and Technology Management at the Cambridge Judge Business School. He served as the Dean of the school from 2011 to 2021. Kishore Sengupta is Professor of Operations and Technology Management at the Cambridge Judge Business School.

Reforming the Unreformable

Reforming the Unreformable PDF Author: Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262526875
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 211

Book Description
A report on development economics in action, by a crucial player in Nigeria's recent reforms. Corrupt, mismanaged, and seemingly hopeless: that's how the international community viewed Nigeria in the early 2000s. Then Nigeria implemented a sweeping set of economic and political changes and began to reform the unreformable. This book tells the story of how a dedicated and politically committed team of reformers set out to fix a series of broken institutions, and in the process repositioned Nigeria's economy in ways that helped create a more diversified springboard for steadier long-term growth. The author, Harvard- and MIT-trained economist Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, currently Nigeria's Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance and formerly Managing Director of the World Bank, played a crucial part in her country's economic reforms. In Nigeria's Debt Management Office, and later as Minister of Finance, she spearheaded negotiations with the Paris Club that led to the wiping out of $30 billion of Nigeria's external debt, 60 percent of which was outright cancellation. Reforming the Unreformable offers an insider's view of those debt negotiations; it also details the fight against corruption and the struggle to implement a series of macroeconomic and structural reforms. This story of development economics in action, written from the front lines of economic reform in Africa, offers a unique perspective on the complex and uncertain global economic environment.

Failed State 2030

Failed State 2030 PDF Author:

Book Description
" This monograph describes how a failed state in 2030 may impact the United States and the global economy. It also identifies critical capabilities and technologies the US Air Force should have to respond to a failed state, especially one of vital interest to the United States and one on the cusp of a civil war. Nation-states can fail for a myriad of reasons: cultural or religious conflict, a broken social contract between the government and the governed, a catastrophic natural disaster, financial collapse, war and so forth. Nigeria with its vast oil wealth, large population, and strategic position in Africa and the global economy can, if it fails disproportionately affect the United States and the global economy. Nigeria, like many nations in Africa, gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960. It is the most populous country in Africa and will have nearly 250 million people by 2030. In its relatively short modern history, Nigeria has survived five military coups as well as separatist and religious wars, is mired in an active armed insurgency, is suffering from disastrous ecological conditions in its Niger Delta region, and is fighting one of the modern world's worst legacies of political and economic corruption. A nation with more than 350 ethnic groups, 250 languages, and three distinct religious affiliations--Christian, Islamic, and animist Nigeria's 135 million people today are anything but homogenous. Of Nigeria's 36 states, 12 are Islamic and under the strong and growing influence of the Sokoto caliphate. While religious and ethnic violence are commonplace, the federal government has managed to strike a tenuous balance among the disparate religious and ethnic factions. With such demographics, Nigeria's failure would be akin to a piece of fine china dropped on a tile floor--it would simply shatter into potentially hundreds of pieces."--DTIC abstract.
