The Role of Technology in Health Care Expenditure in the EU

The Role of Technology in Health Care Expenditure in the EU PDF Author: Kamil Dybczak
Publisher:
ISBN: 9789279148866
Category : Medical care, Cost of
Languages : en
Pages : 26

Book Description
"Total health care expenditure in the EU countries accounts for between 4 and 11% of GDP, out of which between 3 and 9% of GDP is financed from public sources. As it accounts for between 10 and 18 % of total government spending, health care is therefore among the most significant items of social public expenditure. In addition, public expenditure on health care has been growing over most of the second half of the 20th century, not only in absolute terms, but also in relation to the national income. The paper analyses past developments of health care expenditure in EU Member States. The methodology used expands the set of standard explanatory variables, such as demographic structure, income and health status of the population, by a variable characterising the effect of the technological progress on health care spending. Subsequently the paper provides a projection of the long-term development of health care expenditure, with the methodology based on the EC-EPC model extended by the impact of technological development."--Publication information page.

Working Hours and Job Sharing in the EU and USA

Working Hours and Job Sharing in the EU and USA PDF Author: Tito Boeri
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 269

Book Description
"In the last 50 years the gap in labor productivity between Europe and the US has narrowed considerably with estimates in 2005 suggesting a EU-US labor productivity gap of about 5 per cent. Yet, average per capita income in the EU is still about 30% lower than in the US. This persistent gap in income per capita can be almost entirely explained by Europeans working less than Americans." "Why do Europeans work so little compared to Americans? What do they do with their spare time outside work? Can they be induced to work more without reducing labor productivity? If so, how? And what is the effect on well-being if policies are created to reward paid work as opposed to other potentially socially valuable activities, like child-bearing? More broadly, should the state interfere at all when it comes to bargaining over working hours? This volume explores these questions and many more in an attempt to understand the changing nature of the hours worked in the USA and EU, as well as the effects of policies that impose working hour reductions."--Résumé de l'éditeur.

Services and Employment

Services and Employment PDF Author: Mary Gregory
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 069122563X
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 263

Book Description
Why is Europe's employment rate almost 10 percent lower than that of the United States? This "jobs gap" has typically been blamed on the rigidity of European labor markets. But in Services and Employment, an international group of leading labor economists suggests quite a different explanation. Drawing on the findings of a two-year research project that examined data from France, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States, these economists argue that Europe's 25 million "missing" jobs can be attributed almost entirely to its relative lack of service jobs. The jobs gap is actually a services gap. But, Services and Employment asks, why does the United States consume services at such a greater rate than Europe? Services and Employment is the first systematic and comprehensive international comparison on the subject. Mary Gregory, Wiemer Salverda, Ronald Schettkat, and their fellow contributors consider the possible role played by differences in how certain services--particularly health care and education--are provided in Europe and the United States. They examine arguments that Americans consume more services because of their higher incomes and that American households outsource more domestic work. The contributors also ask whether differences between U.S. and European service sectors encapsulate fundamental trans-Atlantic differences in lifestyle choices. In addition to the editors, the contributors include Victor Fuchs, William Baumol, Giovanni Russo, Adriaan Kalwij, Stephen Machin, Andrew Glyn, Joachin Möller, John Schmitt, Michel Sollogoub, Robert Gordon, and Richard Freeman.

The Transatlantic Productivity Gap

The Transatlantic Productivity Gap PDF Author: Raquel Ortega-Argilés
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
During the last 2 decades, Europe's economy experienced a productivity slowdown whereas the United States (US) economy exhibited a marked acceleration. The result is that since the early 1990s the relative productivity levels between the two regions have continuously diverged, leading to a transatlantic productivity gap. Much of the explanation for this is the strong performance of the US in the so-called 'new economy' or 'knowledge economy' and in particular the underinvestment in R&D, and as a result, productivity and innovation has been at the forefront in the European Policy agenda. However, various explanations for the US-European Union transatlantic productivity gap suggest that the picture is rather more complex than simply the effects on, or the result of, particular technology-driven sectors.

Industrial Productivity in Europe

Industrial Productivity in Europe PDF Author: Matilde Mas
Publisher: Edward Elgar Publishing
ISBN: 0857932101
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 497

Book Description
This book analyses growth at the total economy and industry level from an international perspective, providing unique cross-country comparisons. The authors focus on the EU-25 countries but also include the US, Japan and Korea. The chapters explore growth patterns from a long-run perspective, although greater attention is paid to the period of expansion from 19952007 and the post 2008 period of crisis. Each contribution builds on a common methodology based on a detailed database providing a high degree of disaggregation with respect to the industries and factors accounting for growth. The role played by ICT is expertly emphasized, in particular the different paths followed in the US and the EU. This topical book will prove to be an unrivalled source of comparative data for academics, practitioners and policymakers alike.
