The aim of this study is to investigate how Italian listed companies behave about risk disclosure and how they manage the risks they face or will face. I study companies listed on Italian Stock market disclosing risk reporting in their annual reports between 2005 (first year of adoption of IAS) and 2008 (D.Lgs. 32/2007 that imposed to implement the Directive 51/2003/CE). From 2005 onwards there is an increase in the number of companies which have a section dedicated to risk in Relazione sulla Gestione. The total number of risk-related section in the annual report is applied to assign a risk disclosure score to each company. About annual report of year 2008 several hypotheses test whether there are any corporate differences between companies that have a high or low risk disclosure level. I make univariate and multivariate tests to find out if there are any relations between risk disclosure, company characteristics and corporate governance characteristics.

The reviewed papers are classified into two principal themes: the incentives for and/or informativeness of risk reporting. Our review demonstrates areas of significant divergence in the literature specifically: mandatory versus voluntary risk reporting, manual versus automated content analysis, within-country versus cross-country variations in risk reporting, and risk reporting in financial versus non-financial firms. Our paper identifies a number of issues which require further research. In particular we draw attention to two: first, a lack of clarity and consistency around the conceptualization of risk; and second, the potential costs and benefits of standard-setters' involvement.

Reporting on Risk argues that this selective concern with danger is powerfully shaped by the media, whose coverage of potentially hazardous events is governed more by a need to excite the public than to inform it. Singer and Endreny survey a wide range of print and electronic media to provide an unprecedented look at how hundreds of different hazards are presented to the public—from toxic waste and food poisoning to cigarette smoking, from transportation accidents to famine, and from experimental surgery to communicable diseases. Their investigations raise thought-provoking questions about what the media tell us about modern risks, which hazards are covered and which ignored, and how the media determine when hazards should be considered risky. Are natural hazards reported differently than man-made hazards? Is greater emphasis placed on the potential benefits or the potential drawbacks of complex new technologies?
