Book Description
Have you ever wondered by how much CO2 emissions can be reduced by running cars electrically or with hydrogen as fuel? This Brief provides a quantitative answer to this question using the example of the combined road traffic in Spain. The authors calculate the resulting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the production of hydrogen gas or the required electricity and installing and maintaining the necessary infrastructure. In this way, they can compare with the GHG emissions in the present situation of oil fueled cars. Using different scenarios, they obtain an assessment how much ‘greener’ the electric or hydrogen cars can get.The method described in this Brief is scalable and readily adaptable to other countries. It can thus be used for investigating sensible approaches and developing recommendations for a conversion. As expected, the results depend strongly on the production scenarios for hydrogen or electricity production. The wrong choice can even result in increased GHG emissions. A proper choice of the roadmap toward a more sustainable and greener future is of greatest importance – the results described in this Brief can serve as a valuable and useful guide on our way.

Hydrogen Electrical Vehicles

Hydrogen Electrical Vehicles PDF Author: Mehmet Sankir
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 1394167539
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 276

Book Description
HYDROGEN ELECTRICAL VEHICLES Hydrogen electrical vehicles are an essential component of the “Green New Deal” and this book covers cutting-edge technologies designed for fuel-cell-powered cars. The realization of the decision of 28 countries to keep global warming at 2 degrees and below, which is stated in the Paris Agreement, and the achievement of minimizing CO2 emissions, can only be accomplished by establishing a hydrogen ecosystem. A new geopolitical order is envisaged, in which sectors dealing with energy production, distribution, and storage, thus decreasing the carbon footprint, are reconstructed. In short, an economic order with new tax regulations is being created in which the carbon footprint will be followed. This global effort called the “Green Deal” is defined as a new growth strategy aiming at net-zero CO2 emissions. We know that the total share of transportation in CO2 emissions is about 24%. Therefore, efforts for reducing emissions must include utilizing hydrogen in transport. The subjects covered in the book include: An introduction to hydrogen and electrical vehicles; Hydrogen storage and compression systems; Hydrogen propulsion systems for UAVs; Test and evaluation of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles; Hydrogen production and PEM fuel cells for electrical vehicles; The power and durability issues of fuel cell vehicles. Audience The book will attract readers from diverse fields such as chemistry, physics, materials science, engineering, mechanical and chemical engineering, as well as energy-focused engineering and hydrogen generation industry programs that will take advantage of using this comprehensive review of the hydrogen electrical vehicles.

Book Description
Dive into the Clean Energy Revolution with Hydrogen Fuel: A Comprehensive Guide As the world grapples with the urgent need to combat climate change, hydrogen fuel emerges as a beacon of hope. This versatile energy carrier holds immense potential to power a cleaner, more sustainable future across various sectors. Discover the Advantages of Hydrogen Fuel: Zero-Emission Operation: Unlike traditional fossil fuels, hydrogen fuel cells produce only water vapor as a byproduct, significantly improving air quality and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. High Efficiency: Fuel cells convert a higher percentage of chemical energy directly into electricity compared to combustion engines, leading to lower energy consumption and reduced environmental impact. Long Range and Rapid Refueling: Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) offer a driving range comparable to gasoline cars, with refueling times similar to filling a gasoline tank, making them convenient for long-distance travel. Quiet and Smooth Performance: Fuel cells operate silently, providing a more peaceful driving experience and reducing noise pollution in urban areas. Beyond Transportation: Hydrogen's applications extend to stationary power generation, industrial processes, and even maritime and aviation sectors, offering a versatile clean energy solution. Explore the Future of Transportation with Hydrogen Cars: Cleaner Air for Everyone: Widespread adoption of FCVs can significantly reduce tailpipe emissions, leading to cleaner air, improved public health, and a healthier planet. Sustainable Long-Distance Travel: With a range and refueling times comparable to gasoline cars, FCVs offer a viable alternative for long-distance journeys without compromising on convenience. Performance and Enjoyment: Hydrogen cars deliver instant torque and smooth acceleration, providing a responsive and enjoyable driving experience. Unveiling the Technology Behind Hydrogen Fuel Cells: Electrochemical Power: Fuel cells function like tiny power plants, converting the chemical energy stored in hydrogen directly into electricity through an electrochemical reaction. Types of Fuel Cells: Different fuel cell technologies exist, each with its own characteristics and applications, including PEMFCs for vehicles and SOFCs for stationary power generation. Challenges and Opportunities on the Road to a Hydrogen Economy: Overcoming Infrastructure Hurdles: Building a network of hydrogen refueling stations is crucial for widespread adoption, requiring significant investment and infrastructure development. Racing Toward Zero

Racing Toward Zero PDF Author: Kelly Senecal
Publisher: SAE International
ISBN: 1468601474
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 301

Book Description
In Racing Toward Zero, the authors explore the issues inherent in developing sustainable transportation. They review the types of propulsion systems and vehicle options, discuss low-carbon fuels and alternative energy sources, and examine the role of regulation in curbing emissions. All technologies have an impact on the environment, from internal combustion engine vehicles to battery electric vehicles, fuel cell electric vehicles, and hybrids-there is no silver bullet. The battery electric vehicle may seem the obvious path to a sustainable, carbon-free transportation future, but it's not the only, nor necessarily the best, path forward. The vast majority of vehicles today use the internal combustion engine (ICE), and this is unlikely to change anytime soon. Improving the ICE and its fuels-entering a new ICE age-must be a main route on the road to zero emissions. How do we go green? The future requires a balanced approach to transportation. It's not a matter of choosing between combustion or electrification; it's combustion and electrification. As the authors say, "The future is eclectic." By harnessing the best qualities of both technologies, we will be in the best position to address our transportation future as quickly as possible. Transitions to Alternative Transportation Technologies

Transitions to Alternative Transportation Technologies PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309121000
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 142

Book Description
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (HFCVs) could alleviate the nation's dependence on oil and reduce U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide, the major greenhouse gas. Industry-and government-sponsored research programs have made very impressive technical progress over the past several years, and several companies are currently introducing pre-commercial vehicles and hydrogen fueling stations in limited markets. However, to achieve wide hydrogen vehicle penetration, further technological advances are required for commercial viability, and vehicle manufacturer and hydrogen supplier activities must be coordinated. In particular, costs must be reduced, new automotive manufacturing technologies commercialized, and adequate supplies of hydrogen produced and made available to motorists. These efforts will require considerable resources, especially federal and private sector funding. This book estimates the resources that will be needed to bring HFCVs to the point of competitive self-sustainability in the marketplace. It also estimates the impact on oil consumption and carbon dioxide emissions as HFCVs become a large fraction of the light-duty vehicle fleet.
