Of five thousand seven hundred and forty nine samples of imported food products examined by the federal authorities last year one thousand two hundred and forty-six, or more than twenty per cent., were found not to comply with the law. Some of the European countries that have strict laws against adul teration and substitution make generous exceptions inthe case of goods manufactured for export. So much for the dangers from abroad (although a book on the subject might be written). In the United States the maker of standard goods must fight swarms of imitators and this fight is as much in the interest of the consumer as it is of himself. Universal attention has been called to the general conditions by the Pure Food Law which went into effect this year, but as this law is only a regulation of interstate commerce it can affect only a small part of a large division - for pure food is only a division of the much larger subject of Substitution. Our present advantage is that we have come to an era of agitation and inquiry - and thus the buyers are finding out the value of quality, standards and trade-marks. This small volume is a contribution to the cause. As the responsible party between the manufacturer and the consumer, the dealer may easily become the target of an unjust cross-fire. There are many thousands of dealers of the very highest character and responsibility. To these both the manufacturer and the consumer owe not only recognition but unfaltering support. There are thousands more who will improve their methods when they know the facts and realize that the only merchandizing that can be really success ful must be founded on quality and satisfaction - and these, we hope, will read this book. Excerpt from Family Economics Review, 1983: No. 1 In contrast, the disparities between the not - employed and employed farm women for the two household task categories weakened when they were tested across net farm income sub groups and types of farming operations. In the household work category, the mean scores for both groups of farm women were the same for all net farm income subgroups and all types of farm operations. In the category of caring for animals and a garden for the family's food consumption, the mean scores were similar except for farms above the mean net farm income and for farms that had a product mix of mostly crops. The statistical tests by subgroup did not confirm the over all finding that farm women not employed off the farm did these tasks more frequently than employed farm women. In summary, data from the 1980 National Farm Women Survey indicate that as farm women assume the third role of employee, they are likely to remain involved in the farm operation and to do both farm and household tasks with the same regularity as their counterparts who are not employed. Only the task of maintaining farm records is likely to be done less regularly by employed farm women versus those not employed. Excerpt from Farm Family Income: Its Distribution and Relation to Nonfarm Income A concentration of State economic areas in the highest median rural farm family income group occurs in the diagonal that extends from the southwestern corner of Minnesota to northeastern Ohio. Twenty-one of 38 areas in this in come group are found here. The remaining 17 areas are widely dispersed-in locations that extend from central Connecticut to Puget Sound and southern California. This highest median income group of areas comprises almost 11 percent of all State economic areas, and, in 19h9, these areas contained 11 percent of all rural farm families and unrelated individuals. The estimated median incomes for each State economic area are shown in appendix table 111. Perhaps, however, a somewhat more detailed accounting is needed of the geography of area median rural farm family incomes for the lowest and the highest median income groups. It is in these two groups that greatest possibilities for variation occur. Among the 51 areas with median incomes of less than 6 had less than $600 (2 under and the lowest was $h56. An additional 6 of these areas had median incomes that ranged between $600 and $7119, while in 13 areas the median incomes ranged between $750 and $899. In a little more than half (26) of these lowest income areas, the median incomes fell beween $900 and $999.
