Author: Matthias Heydt
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642172172
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 190
Book Description
In this thesis, Matthias Heydt applies digital in-line holography to achieve for the first time a complete three dimensional and real time motion analysis of Ulva zoospores, both in solution and in the vicinity of different surfaces. These results provide previously unknown information about the behavior and mechanism spores use to select a suitable site for settlement. This work gives deeper insight into biofouling algae and stimulates new design strategies for antifouling coatings. Furthermore, the tracking system developed during this research could be used as a new system for assessing the antifouling performance on different surfaces at very early points in time, allowing disentanglement of surface conditioning and interaction of spores with pristine chemistries.

Selected Biology Advance Level Topics (Volume 2)
Author: James F Frayne
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1326304569
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 670
Book Description
This book takes a look outside the box in many Biological subject areas. That is not to say that only Ôoutside the boxÕ topics are addressed. The student will find that the understanding of other topics is strengthened by a more liberal approach, looking in greater detail than would generally be done in the normal text book. Furthermore, a Ôstep-by-stepÕ approach has been adopted for many topics, where tricky concepts are built upon brick-by-brick. This two volume publication is mainly aimed at advance level Biology students, but there is much that can be read Ð and enjoyed Ð by students yet to prepare for their advanced studies. As with ÔEasy as you GoÕ this publication is therefore ideally suited to student, educator and parent alike because of its simplistic, down-to-earth approach, supported by a multitude of visual aids.

Seaweed Biology
Author: Christian Wiencke
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642284515
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 508
Book Description
Seaweeds, also known as macroalgae, are among the most important primary producers and act as ecological engineers on rocky coasts of the world’s oceans. In addition to their extreme ecological importance they are also of high economic relevance. Complementing available textbooks with its more research-oriented approach, this volume contains 22 chapters by renowned experts, grouped in five parts. In Part I fundamental processes and acclimation strategies of seaweeds towards the abiotic environment are covered. Part II focuses on the multitude of biotic interactions in seaweed communities, and in Part III the reader is introduced to the structure and function of the main seaweed systems of the world. The chapters of Part IV highlight and discuss the effects of global and local environmental changes on seaweeds and their communities. In the final Part V a comprehensive overview of developments in seaweed aquaculture, industrial applications and the overall economic importance of seaweeds is provided. Summarizing the advances in seaweed biology achieved within the last few decades, this book also identifies gaps in the present knowledge and needs for future research.
