Hovering
Author: Rhett Davis
Publisher: Hachette Australia

Category : Fiction

Pages : 198
Book Description
The city was in the same place. But was it the same city? Alice stands outside her family's 1950s red brick veneer, unsure if she should approach. It has been sixteen years, but it's clear she is out of options. Lydia opens the door to a familiar stranger - thirty-nine, tall, bony, pale. She knows her sister immediately. But something isn't right. Meanwhile her son, George, is upstairs, still refusing to speak, and lost in a virtual world of his own design. Nothing is as it was, and while the sisters' resentments flare, it seems that the city too is agitated. People wake up to streets that have rearranged themselves, in houses that have moved to different parts of town. Tensions rise and the authorities have no answers. The internet becomes alight with conspiracy theories. As the world lurches around them, Alice's secret will be revealed, and the ground at their feet will no longer be so firm. A spectacular debut novel from one of Australia's most exciting new writers. Winner of the Victorian Premier's Unpublished Manuscript Award, Hovering crosses genres, literary styles and conventions to create a powerful and kaleidoscopic story about three people struggling to find connection in a chaotic and impermanent world. 'Every now and then a book comes along that resists a neat definition. Hovering is just such a read . . . this fascinating, compelling novel will challenge readers' Good Reading 'in the mould of Jennifer Egan or AM Homes . . . [a] slick debut' The Guardian 'Original and blackly funny' Toni Jordan, The Age 'transformative' ArtsHub 'immediately striking on both a conceptual and a formal level' Sydney Morning Herald 'This is such an original novel, and Davis's writing is exhilarating, surprising but never heavy-handed . . . one of the most exciting books of this year' Kill Your Darlings 'a compassionate, surreal, clear-eyed exploration of modern Australia and the place of art in the national conversation' PS News

Hover
Author: Anne A. Wilson
Publisher: Macmillan + ORM
ISBN: 1466861932
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 385
Book Description
Helicopter pilot Lt. Sara Denning joins a navy battle group with little fanfare—and that's just the way she likes it. After her brother Ian's tragic death, her career path seemed obvious: step into his shoes and enter the Naval Academy, despite her fear of water. Sara's philosophy is simple—blend in, be competent, and above all, never do anything to stand out as a woman in a man's world. Somewhere along the way, Sara lost herself—her feminine, easygoing soul is now buried under so many defensive layers, she can't reach it anymore. When she meets strong, self-assured Lt. Eric Marxen, her defenses start to falter. Eric coordinates flight operations for a Navy SEAL team that requests Sara as the exclusive pilot. This blatant show of favoritism causes conflict with the other pilots; Sara's sexist boss seems intent on making her life miserable, and her roommate and best friend, the only other woman on the ship, is avoiding her. It doesn't help that her interactions with Eric leave her reeling. The endgame of the SEALs' mission is so secret, even Sara doesn't know the reason behind her mandated participation. Soon, though, the training missions become real, and Sara must overcome her fears before they plunge her into danger. When Sara's life is on the line, can she find her true self again and follow the orders of her heart before it is too late? Anne A. Wilson's Hover is a thrilling, emotional women's journey written by a groundbreaking former navy pilot. Simulation Study of the Lift-roll Coupling Problem for Hovering VTOL Aircraft
Author: Robert A. Jacobsen
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aircraft
Languages : en
Pages : 28
Book Description
The effects of lift-roll coupling on the handling qualities of hovering VTOL aircraft using differential thrust for roll control were assessed in a piloted simulation study in the Ames six-degrees-of-freedom motion simulator. The configuration tested has three vertical thrust sources, one on the roll axis and two laterally displaced from the roll axis, with a thrust distribution of 25/50/25. The outboard thrust sources were modulated to provide roll control whereas all three provided height control. Maximum thrust-to-weight ratio was varied together with a coupling parameter that combined roll-inertia, weight, and engine location. Results showed that handling qualities are affected not only by the occurrence of lift-roll coupling (dependent on both variables) but also by the severity of the coupling (dependent on the coupling parameter alone). However, the advantages of differential thrust for control can be retained with careful design.
