Theory and Design of Air Cushion Craft
Author: Liang Yun
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080519067
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 647
Book Description
This definitive text describes the theory and design both of Air Cushion Vehicles (ACV) and Surface Effect Ships (SES). It begins by introducing hovercraft types and their development and application throughout the world in the last three decades, before going on to discuss the theoretical aspects of ACV and SES craft covering their hovering performance, dynamic trim over calm water, resistance, stability, manoeuvrability, skirt configuration and analysis of forces acting on the skirts, ACV and SES seakeeping, and the methodology of scaling aerodynamic and hydrodynamic forces acting on the ACV/SES from model test data. The latter chapters describe a design methodology, including design criteria and standard methods for estimating craft performance, lift system design, skirt design, hull structure, propulsion systems and power unit selection. Much technical information, data, and references to further work on hovercraft and SES design is provided. The book will be a useful reference to engineers, technicians, teachers, students (both undergraduate and postgraduate), operators etc. who are involved in ACV/SES research, design, construction and operation. - Guides the reader on how to perform machinery and systems selection within ACV and SES overall design - For teachers, students (both at under- and post-graduate level), engineers and technicians involved in ACV/SES

Hovercraft Technology, Economics and Applications
Author: J.R. Amyot
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483290859
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 787
Book Description
The amphibious versatility, marine speed and low footprint pressure have given the hovercraft a role in specialized applications. Among them are search and rescue, emergency medical services, military and arctic operations, icebreaking, patrol, law enforcement, ferries, and recreational activities such as racing. To meet these demands, the hovercraft has undergone considerable development since its inception. A comprehensive and timely review of the analysis, design, operation, economics and applications of hovercraft is presented in this volume by a team of highly qualified experts. The topics covered range from first principles to the state-of-the-art, with extensive references to current literature. The overall presentation is intended not to exceed the final year level of undergraduate engineering. The introduction and summary sections of all chapters are intended to give a qualitative grasp of the material covered without having to read all the technical portions. In varying degrees, the volume will appeal to managers, decision-support staff, operators, technologists, undergraduate students, and anyone entering the hovercraft field or seeking an introduction to it. It will also be of interest to design engineers, researchers and graduate students. Thus, this volume can serve as an up-to-date reference on several important aspects of hovercraft for a wide range of readers.

Ships and Shipbuilders
Author: Fred M Walker
Publisher: Seaforth Publishing
ISBN: 1848320728
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 240
Book Description
In the past three centuries the ship has developed from the relatively unsophisticated sail-driven vessel which would have been familiar to the sailors of the Tudor navy, to the huge motor-driven container ships, nuclear submarines and vast cruise liners that ply our seas today. Who were the innovators and builders who, during that span of time, prompted and instigated the most significant advances? In the past three centuries the ship has developed from the relatively unsophisticated sail-driven vessel which would have been familiar to the sailors of the Tudor navy, to the huge motor-driven container ships, nuclear submarines and vast cruise liners that ply our seas today. Who were the innovators and builders who, during that span of time, prompted and instigated the most significant advances? In this new book the author describes the lives and deeds of more the 120 great engineers, scientists, philosophers, businessmen, shipwrights, naval architects and inventors who shaped ship design and shipbuilding world wide. Covering the story chronologically, and going back briefly even to Archimedes, such well-known names as Anthony Deane, Peter the Great, James Watt, Robert Fulton and Isambard Kingdom Brunel share space with lesser known characters like the luckless Frederic Sauvage, a pioneer of screw propulsion who, unable to interest the French navy in his tests in the early 1830s, was bankrupted and landed in debtors prison. With the inclusion of such names as Ben Lexcen, the Australian yacht designer who developed the controversial winged keel for the 1983 Americas Cup, the story is brought right up to date. Concise linking chapters place all these innovators in context so that a clear and fascinating history of the development of ships and shipbuilding emerges from the pages. An original and important new reference book.

A Study of a Skirtless Hovercraft Design
Author: Edward A. Kelleher
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781423586562
Category : Coanda effect
Languages : en
Pages : 70
Book Description
Initial study into three possible skirtless hovercraft designs. The designs utilize Coanda nozzles and a Coanda wing surface to generate lift and create a pressure cushion below the craft. The pressure cushion is to be maintained by an air curtain created by flow spill from the Coanda wing surface. Three proposed skirtless hovercraft designs were analyzed via computational fluid dynamics to ascertain their lift generation capabilities. The three designs were adaptations from William Walter's hybricraft primer and his patent for a fan driven lift generation device. Each design featured Coanda nozzles, or nozzles that utilize the Coanda effect, to redirect air flow to aid in the generation of an air curtain around a central air flow. The designs also utilized a Coanda wing as a lifting body to aid in lift generation. Each design was set at a height above ground of one foot and a radius of two feet. The craft was assumed to be axisymmetric around a central axis for a perfectly circular craft, much like a flying saucer. The craft can be divided into several parts, the core, the nozzles, the plenum chamber (for designs 2 and 3), and the wing. Flow is generated from rotor blades situated one foot above the top of the core of the craft. The nozzles are located at the edges of the craft below the wing. In designs two and three the plenum chamber is the region between the core and the wing. For each design three cases were performed where t was increased for each case. This resulted in a total of nine cases, three cases for three designs. For each case the ratio of nozzle thickness to the radius of the curved plate, t/R, was set to 0.344 and t was increased while R was calculated to maintain the ratio.
