Household Facilities and Equipment (HFE) survey is an annual survey with a sample size of approximately 35,000 households, representing almost all private households in Canada. CMHC first sponsored three questions on physical house condition, repair, and energy improvements on the 1982 HFE. Questions on household mobility status, and homeowner mortgage status were sponsored on the 1983 HFE. In 1985 CMHC was able to bring the questions in these areas together and sponsor them along with, for the first time, a question on dwelling value on the 1985 HFE survey. Previous data quality report findings were used to sponsor improved versions of the mortgage and mobility questions. CMHC sponsored 14 housing questions on the Statistics Canada 1985 Survey of Household Facilities and Equipment (HFE). The sponsored questions addressed information needs relating to dwelling condition, renovation activity, residential mortgages, residential mobility and value of dwelling. Results from the sponsored questions will be added by Statistics Canada to the 1985 Household Income, Facilities and Equipment (HIFE) Database later in 1986. Addition of these sponsored questions to the HIFE Database will result in an enhanced national housing database for housing research, housing policy and program analysis. This data collection provides information on the characteristics of a national sample of housing units. Data include the year the structure was built, type and number of living quarters, occupancy status, access, number of rooms, presence of commercial establishments on the property, and property value. Additional data focus on kitchen and plumbing facilities, types of heating fuel used, source of water, sewage disposal, heating and air conditioning equipment, and major additions, alterations or repairs to the property. Information provided on housing expenses includes monthly mortgage or rent payments, cost of services such as utilities, garbage collection, and property insurance, and amount of real estate taxes paid in the previous year. Similar data are provided for housing units previously occupied by recent movers. Indicators of housing and neighborhood quality are also supplied. For housing quality, indicators include such things as privacy of bedrooms, condition of kitchen facilities, basement or roof leakage, breakdowns of plumbing facilities and equipment, and overall opinion of the structure. For quality of neighborhood, indicators include exterminator service, boarded-up buildings, and overall quality of the neighborhood. In addition to housing characteristics, some demographic data are provided on household members, such as age, sex, race, marital status, income, and relationship to householder.
