Book Description
From the very beginning, I believed that every moment of our life has a story written in it, because its unpredictableness breeds countless posibilities. Its only because we are so tuned to our mechanical jobs that we do not keep a track of it. As we grow old, the stories are written on the hard disk and then deleted simultaeneously, for we have better things to do than remebering silly episodes. Therefore, I turned to my childhood. Where little incidents have shaped my life. Where a girl taught me what is struggle. Where a school showed me what is friendship. And where a friend demonstrated the true worth of fellowfeeling. This book has just captured those moments and some other stories as well, some funny, some poignant, which either I have encountered or listened somewhere. I have no pretension of being a great writer. This book is written in a very day-to-day english, because I feel ornamental language destroys emotions. Being my first attempt, I have also no idea about the rules of writing, if something of that sort exists. The tales are just the reflections of my feeling. Hope, the esteemed readers enjoy.

Category : Fiction

Pages : 146

Book Description
These stories are elements of loud thinking triggered by the questions hurled at us by contemporary life. But, it doesn’t preach or recommend any ideology to you. Some of these stories may enthral you, some might lacerate you, some might tickle you and some might provoke you. Some might possibly provide you with new insights. Some could raise critical questions. Some might lead you to agree with the author’s position. Some may provoke you to oppose him. The aim is to spur you into thinking on your own. A reader’s mind is in no way inferior to a writer’s. Instead of looking at life as a mere story, or story as a mere extension of imagination, it projects a vision of life through these stories. It treaded a path of equilibrium—no pomposity of dismissively treating grass-root’s idiom; escaping the grip of pseudo-modernity complicating the written form of the language with the ostensible purpose of importing subtlety. Maalan V. Narayanan is an eminent award winning writer bilingual (Tamil and English) writer, bestowed with various coveted awards including Lee Kong Chian Research Fellowship of Singapore and ‘Krititva Samagra Samman’ (award for wholesomeness in creativity) of Bharaiya Basha Parishad. He has served in Senates of various Universities and committees of National Book Trust and Sahitya Akademi Dr.K.S.Subramanian, a former Director of Asian Development Bank, is an eminent translator who has won many awards for his translations. These Precious Days

These Precious Days PDF Author: Ann Patchett
Publisher: HarperCollins
ISBN: 0063092808
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 320

Book Description
The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "The elegance of Patchett’s prose is seductive and inviting: with Patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." —Publisher's Weekly “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer’s eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books (author of The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz’s Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author’s grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark—and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.

The Wrong Set and Other Stories

The Wrong Set and Other Stories PDF Author: Angus Wilson
Publisher: Faber & Faber
ISBN: 0571253083
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 209

Book Description
Angus Wilson's first volume of short stories, The Wrong Set was first published in 1949 to immense critical acclaim. The collection is a brilliantly funny exposure of the protective devices with which people seek to mask deep-laid egotism. There is the wallowing in self-adulation on the part of the 'crazy Cockshott family', as they delight to dub themselves. There is the search for really nice standards on the part of Vi, singer at the 'Passion Fruit' nightclub - as hopelessly bemused a spirit as ever lived in sin at Earl's Court and attempted to lecture a young Communist nephew with untidy hair and spectacles. There is the humbug of the bullying new curator at the provincial Art Gallery. And the staff dance at the South Kensington hotel, where lives the lady who spends her life trying to achieve 'a Knightsbridge appearance on a Kensington purse', and where, as the evening progresses and the drinks begin to tell, the lady-like façades and gentlemanly courtesy of the clientele crack up with a vengeance.
