This book is intended to be a reference text on hydrostatic extru sion, a multidisciplinary technology involving the forming process of materials, tribology, high pressure engineering and so forth. Until now only one book bearing the title of hydrostatic extrusion, by Prof. Alexander and Dr. Lengyel, has been published since 1971. Although there are chapters on hydrostatic extrusion in such books as THE MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF MATERIALS UNDER PRESSURE edited by Dr. Pugh, METAL FORMING by Prof. Avitzur and HIGH PRESSURE TECHNOLOGY by Drs. Spain and Paauwe, it is regrettable that no up~to-date reference books on hydro static extrusion are available. As is well known, hydrostatic extrusion is a nearly-ideal lubricated extrusion. Its advantages have been demonstrated by laboratory research in the past two decades, yet many manufacturers, however, still hesitate to adopt the technology in their plants. Their hesitation is certainly due to the lack of exact information on the process and its equipment and also to 'their unfamiliarity with the actual method of operation. In order to provide a useful introduction to the subject for engi neers who work in industries which plan to employ this technique and also to give exact and reliable information on the durability and perfo- ance of production facilities, as well as the capabilities of the process and the properties of extruded products, we decided to publish this book. The International Symposium "Fatigue under Thermal and Mechanical Loading", held at Petten (The Netherlands) on May 22-24, 1995, was jointly organized by the Institute for Advanced Materials of The Joint Research Centre, E. C. , and by the Societe Fran~se de Metallurgie et de Materiaux. The fast heating and cooling cycles experienced by many high temperature components cause thermally induced stresses, which often operate in combination with mechanical loads. The resulting thermal / mechanical fatigue cycle leads to material degradation mechanisms and failure modes typical of service cycles. The growing awareness that the synergism between the combined thermal and mechanical loads can not be reproduced by means of isothermal tests, has resulted in an increasing interest in thermal and thermo-mechanical fatigue testing. This trend has been reinforced by the constant pull by industry for more performant, yet safer high temperature systems, pushing the materials to the limit of their properties. Dedicated ASTM meetings in particular have set the scene for this area of research. The proceedings of the symposium organized by D. A. Spera and D. F. Mowbray in 1975 provided a reference book on thermal fatigue which reflects the knowledge and experimental capabilities of the mid-seventies.

Steel and its Heat Treatment: Bofors Handbook describes the fundamental metallographic concepts, materials testing, hardenability, heat treatment, and dimensional changes that occur during the hardening and tempering stages of steel. The book explains the boundaries separating the grain contents of steel, which are the low-angle grain boundaries, the high-angle grain boundaries, and the twinning boundaries. Engineers can determine the hardenability of steel through the Grossman test or the Jominy End-Quench test. Special hardening and tempering methods are employed for steel that are going to be fabricated into tools. The different methods of hardening are manual hardening for a small surface (the tip of a screw); spin hardening for objects with a rotational symmetry (gears with 5 modules or less); and progressive hardening (or a combination with spin hardening) for flat surfaces. The hardening and tempering processes cause changes in size and shape of the substance.
