Book Description
Excerpt from Horeb and Jerusalem It is well known that some of the localities in the East, of deepest interest to the reader of Scripture, are involved in uncertainty and dispute. Great names can be quoted in support of various opinions regarding them, and not a few have resigned themselves to the conclusion that, at this distance of time, they are beyond the possibility of satisfactory identification. It is admitted at any rate, on all sides, that the most important section of Scripture Topography is open for further inquiry and settlement, and I hope, therefore, to be the more readily excused in presenting some aspects of the subject that have appeared to me worthy of attention, and that may contribute, in some degree, to a clearer elucidation of the sacred narrative. The localities here discussed refer to the scenes of the Exodus and the Redemption. In the first section of the book, I have attempted to trace the route of the Israelites from Goshen to Sinai, and to examine some of those questions which have had so prominent a place in recent controversies on the Pentateuch. Book Description
Excerpt from The Conquest of Jerusalem The emotion, the heat, and the fasting had been too much for him. He wanted to be in the fresh air and alone. But outside in the enclosed court a similar crowd of ardent worshippers Of all races pressed round the movable altars, and prostrated themselves before the tabernacles made from palm-leaves. The officiating priests had to restrict the movements of their arms, and the thurifers, for lack of room, shook their censers up and down instead of swinging them, hundreds of eyes following the bluish fumes ecstatically as they ascended straight to the blue sky above.
