Minority groups experience racial discrimination routinely in their everyday lives This study also explores their perceptions and experiences about racial discrimination, and the changes from the 90s till now. Ethnic Minorities, Media and Participation in Hong Kong

Ethnic Minorities, Media and Participation in Hong Kong PDF Author: Lisa Y.M. Leung
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 100034312X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 223

Book Description
Second and third generation South and Southeast Asian minorities in Hong Kong, being marginalized from mainstream social and political affairs, have developed an ambivalent sense of belonging to their host society. Unlike their forefathers who first settled in Hong Kong under British colonial rule, these younger generations have spent their formative years in the territory. As such, they have increasingly engaged in the public and political realms of society, partly in response to the territory’s rapid political changes. Leung discusses and analyses the complex and diverse engagement of migrant and minority youths in Hong Kong - and their struggle for recognition, while desiring to 'be-long' to a place they call home. Some are joining the calls for democratic changes in the territory. In particular, she argues that much of this struggle can be seen in minorities’ involvement in creative sectors of society. While it will be of especial interest to scholars with an interest in Hong Kong, this book presents a compelling case study for anyone interested in the dynamics of migrant and minority engagement in the creative sector as a strategy for engagement.

Anti-Racism Toolkit: A Toolkit for Racial Inclusion in Hong Kong

Anti-Racism Toolkit: A Toolkit for Racial Inclusion in Hong Kong PDF Author: Shalini Mahtani

Category : Young Adult Nonfiction

Book Description
Often we think we are not racist, but there are things we do that make ethnic minorities (EMs) feel excluded or inferior. Working with ethnic minorities has taught me about micro-aggressions, the small but everyday things that are racist without knowing they are. To not be racist is not enough. As Chinese people represent 92% of the Hong Kong population, if racism is to end in the city, it would need the majority population to help change negative beliefs. To be an anti-racist, I understand that I need to be proactive about calling out racism in Hong Kong. I hope that you will also commit to being an anti-racist. This toolkit will take you on an info-packed journey to help you understand and become an anti-racist. I am still learning, and I welcome any thoughts or comments you have. Contact me at: [email protected] Thank you very much for using this toolkit.

Pages : 75

Book Description
This fifth volume in the Brill Research Perspectives in Comparative Discrimination Law surveys the field of comparative race discrimination law for the purpose of providing an introduction to the nature of comparing systems of discrimination and the transnational search for effective equality laws and policies. This volume includes the perspectives of racialized subjects (subalterns) in the examination of the reach of the laws on the ground. It engages a variety of legal and social science resources in order to compare systems across a number of contexts (such as the United States, Canada, France, South Africa, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Israel, India, and others). The goal is to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of various kinds of anti-discrimination legal devices to aid in the study of law reform efforts across the globe centered on racial equality.
