Bee Optimism

Bee Optimism PDF Author: Jay D Evans
Publisher: Ibra & Nbb
ISBN: 9780860982906
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 148

Book Description
The title of this book reveals all: Jay Evans approaches science and life with clarity and optimism. Every essay in this book is concise yet funny, and rich in content. Each cleverly-worded chapter uncovers exciting findings from complicated research. Some topics covered in these 34 short essays include how bees' fat bodies may hold clues to new mite control strategies (the "Fats Domino Effect"), an aerial view of helicopter beekeepers and burned out foragers, why bees drink dirty water, chasmogamy in soybeans, "trait rot", genetic signatures described as chords composed of eight genetic notes, and winter bees as the third worker form. The essay "Magic Bullets for Mites" is a great example of Jay's ability to communicate complex topics with compelling, accessible prose. Even though he muses that "we are attempting to manage a social organism that is affected by rules we do not yet fully understand" Jay remains firmly rooted in the #Beeoptimism movement: for his scientific mind, the unknown is full of possibilities. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and devoured it in one sitting, although I recommend savoring it more slowly. Marla Spivak St. Paul, Minnesota

Myth and Environmentalism

Myth and Environmentalism PDF Author: Esther Sánchez-Pardo
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 100090072X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
This volume traces the interconnections between myth, environmentalism, narrative, poetry, comics, and innovative artistic practice, using this as a framework through which to examine strategies for repairing our unhealthy relationship with the planet. Challenging late capitalist modes encouraging mindless consumption and the degradation of human–nature relations, this collection advocates a re-evaluation of the ethical relation to "living with" and sharing the Earth. Myth and the environment have shared a rich common cultural history travelling as far back as the times of storytelling and legend, with the environment often the central theme. Following a robust introduction, the book is organized into three main sections—Myth, Disaster, and Present-Day Views on Ecological Damage; Indigenous and Afro-diasporic Myths and Ecological Knowledge; Art Practices, Myth, and Environmental Resilience—and concludes with a Coda from Jeanette Hart-Mann. The methodology draws from diverse perspectives, such as ecocriticism, new materialism, and Anthropocene studies, offering a truly interdisciplinary discussion that reflects on the dialogue among environment and myth, and a broad range of contributions are included from Canada, the United States, the Caribbean, Ukraine, Japan, Morocco, and Brazil. The book joins a long line of approaches on the interrelations between ecological and mythical thinking and criticism that goes back to the early 20th century. This volume will be of interest to students, scholars, activists, and experts in environmental humanities, myth and myth criticism, literature and art on more-than human and nature interaction, ecocriticism, environmental activism, and climate change.

The Bees of Notre-Dame

The Bees of Notre-Dame PDF Author: Meghan P. Browne
Publisher: Random House Studio
ISBN: 0593374568
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 41

Book Description
This lyrical, poignant nonfiction picture book tells the fascinating story of the honeybee colonies that lived on the roof of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris and survived the devastating 2019 fire. High above the bustling streets and gardens of Paris is a little-known wonder: a cluster of beehives. They sit atop the roof of the Notre-Dame cathedral, lovingly tended to by a beekeeper named Sibyle. But when fire broke out in the catherdral in 2019, the bees almost didn’t make it. Firefighters battled heat and smoke, carefully spraying their hoses around the hives, pumping in water from fireboats on the Seine, and, miraculously, they survived. Meghan P. Browne and E. B. Goodale imbue the story of Notre-Dame’s bees and the fire that almost killed them with great hope. After the fire, there is rebuilding to be done, but with hard work and collaboration, perhaps the cathedral can be restored after all. From the rooftops of Paris to the intricacies of a beehive, here is a moving picture book about resilience in the face of disaster.
