Homotopy Limits, Completions and Localizations

Homotopy Limits, Completions and Localizations PDF Author: A. K. Bousfield
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3540381171
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
The main purpose of part I of these notes is to develop for a ring R a functional notion of R-completion of a space X. For R=Zp and X subject to usual finiteness condition, the R-completion coincides up to homotopy, with the p-profinite completion of Quillen and Sullivan; for R a subring of the rationals, the R-completion coincides up to homotopy, with the localizations of Quillen, Sullivan and others. In part II of these notes, the authors have assembled some results on towers of fibrations, cosimplicial spaces and homotopy limits which were needed in the discussions of part I, but which are of some interest in themselves.

Categorical Homotopy Theory

Categorical Homotopy Theory PDF Author: Emily Riehl
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1139952633
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 371

Book Description
This book develops abstract homotopy theory from the categorical perspective with a particular focus on examples. Part I discusses two competing perspectives by which one typically first encounters homotopy (co)limits: either as derived functors definable when the appropriate diagram categories admit a compatible model structure, or through particular formulae that give the right notion in certain examples. Emily Riehl unifies these seemingly rival perspectives and demonstrates that model structures on diagram categories are irrelevant. Homotopy (co)limits are explained to be a special case of weighted (co)limits, a foundational topic in enriched category theory. In Part II, Riehl further examines this topic, separating categorical arguments from homotopical ones. Part III treats the most ubiquitous axiomatic framework for homotopy theory - Quillen's model categories. Here, Riehl simplifies familiar model categorical lemmas and definitions by focusing on weak factorization systems. Part IV introduces quasi-categories and homotopy coherence.

An Alpine Anthology of Homotopy Theory

An Alpine Anthology of Homotopy Theory PDF Author: Dominique Arlettaz
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 082183696X
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 228

Book Description
The second Arolla conference on algebraic topology brought together specialists covering a wide range of homotopy theory and $K$-theory. These proceedings reflect both the variety of talks given at the conference and the diversity of promising research directions in homotopy theory. The articles contained in this volume include significant contributions to classical unstable homotopy theory, model category theory, equivariant homotopy theory, and the homotopy theory of fusionsystems, as well as to $K$-theory of both local fields and $C*$-algebras.

Homotopy Theory of Diagrams

Homotopy Theory of Diagrams PDF Author: Wojciech Chachólski
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821827596
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 106

Book Description
In this paper the authors develop homotopy theoretical methods for studying diagrams. In particular they explain how to construct homotopy colimits and limits in an arbitrary model category. The key concept introduced is that of a model approximation. A model approximation of a category $\mathcal{C}$ with a given class of weak equivalences is a model category $\mathcal{M}$ together with a pair of adjoint functors $\mathcal{M} \rightleftarrows \mathcal{C}$ which satisfy certain properties. The key result says that if $\mathcal{C}$ admits a model approximation then so does the functor category $Fun(I, \mathcal{C})$.

Homotopy of Operads and Grothendieck-Teichmuller Groups

Homotopy of Operads and Grothendieck-Teichmuller Groups PDF Author: Benoit Fresse
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 1470434822
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 743

Book Description
The ultimate goal of this book is to explain that the Grothendieck–Teichmüller group, as defined by Drinfeld in quantum group theory, has a topological interpretation as a group of homotopy automorphisms associated to the little 2-disc operad. To establish this result, the applications of methods of algebraic topology to operads must be developed. This volume is devoted primarily to this subject, with the main objective of developing a rational homotopy theory for operads. The book starts with a comprehensive review of the general theory of model categories and of general methods of homotopy theory. The definition of the Sullivan model for the rational homotopy of spaces is revisited, and the definition of models for the rational homotopy of operads is then explained. The applications of spectral sequence methods to compute homotopy automorphism spaces associated to operads are also explained. This approach is used to get a topological interpretation of the Grothendieck–Teichmüller group in the case of the little 2-disc operad. This volume is intended for graduate students and researchers interested in the applications of homotopy theory methods in operad theory. It is accessible to readers with a minimal background in classical algebraic topology and operad theory.

Interactions between Homotopy Theory and Algebra

Interactions between Homotopy Theory and Algebra PDF Author: Luchezar L. Avramov
Publisher: American Mathematical Soc.
ISBN: 0821838148
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 352

Book Description
This book is based on talks presented at the Summer School on Interactions between Homotopy theory and Algebra held at the University of Chicago in the summer of 2004. The goal of this book is to create a resource for background and for current directions of research related to deep connections between homotopy theory and algebra, including algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and representation theory. The articles in this book are aimed at the audience of beginning researchers with varied mathematical backgrounds and have been written with both the quality of exposition and the accessibility to novices in mind.

Simplicial and Dendroidal Homotopy Theory

Simplicial and Dendroidal Homotopy Theory PDF Author: Gijs Heuts
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031104471
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 622

Book Description
This open access book offers a self-contained introduction to the homotopy theory of simplicial and dendroidal sets and spaces. These are essential for the study of categories, operads, and algebraic structure up to coherent homotopy. The dendroidal theory combines the combinatorics of trees with the theory of Quillen model categories. Dendroidal sets are a natural generalization of simplicial sets from the point of view of operads. In this book, the simplicial approach to higher category theory is generalized to a dendroidal approach to higher operad theory. This dendroidal theory of higher operads is carefully developed in this book. The book also provides an original account of the more established simplicial approach to infinity-categories, which is developed in parallel to the dendroidal theory to emphasize the similarities and differences. Simplicial and Dendroidal Homotopy Theory is a complete introduction, carefully written with the beginning researcher in mind and ideally suited for seminars and courses. It can also be used as a standalone introduction to simplicial homotopy theory and to the theory of infinity-categories, or a standalone introduction to the theory of Quillen model categories and Bousfield localization.
