Reservation Reelism

Reservation Reelism PDF Author: Michelle H. Raheja
Publisher: U of Nebraska Press
ISBN: 0803268270
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 283

Book Description
In this deeply engaging account Michelle H. Raheja offers the first book-length study of the Indigenous actors, directors, and spectators who helped shape Hollywood’s representation of Indigenous peoples. Since the era of silent films, Hollywood movies and visual culture generally have provided the primary representational field on which Indigenous images have been displayed to non-Native audiences. These films have been highly influential in shaping perceptions of Indigenous peoples as, for example, a dying race or as inherently unable or unwilling to adapt to change. However, films with Indigenous plots and subplots also signify at least some degree of Native presence in a culture that largely defines Native peoples as absent or separate. Native actors, directors, and spectators have had a part in creating these cinematic representations and have thus complicated the dominant, and usually negative, messages about Native peoples that films portray. In Reservation Reelism Raheja examines the history of these Native actors, directors, and spectators, reveals their contributions, and attempts to create positive representations in film that reflect the complex and vibrant experiences of Native peoples and communities.

Hollywood Comes to the Rez

Hollywood Comes to the Rez PDF Author: Lori Taguma
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781688258396
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 96

Book Description
This discussion is about the formation of Native American representations in the racialization (class formation) of U.S. culture. The medium of film is used to examine the historical process of shaping Indian imagery, including documentary images and current independent forms. (topics still pertinent today in 2019) In defining the effects of film technique and semiotics, the discussion includes the signification behind realistic models of Indians, and reveals the meaning of portrayals within the context of broader socio-economic policies and goals. While exploring the topic of stereotypic Indian imagery, I discuss the significant social and cultural challenges which independent Indian producers face, in shaping their symbolic images with an underlying sense of historic and temporal reality (reality as art). Issues explored include the nature of native identity in American culture, Hollywood filmic representations of natives, and the new model of Indian imagery currently being created by natives about themselves.

We Come for Good

We Come for Good PDF Author: Paul N. Backhouse
Publisher: University Press of Florida
ISBN: 0813063779
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 398

Book Description
As indigenous populations are invited to participate in cultural heritage identification, research, interpretation, management, and preservation, they are faced with a variety of challenges, questions that are difficult to answer, and demands that must be carefully navigated. We Come for Good describes the development and operations of the Tribal Historic Preservation Office (THPO) of the Seminole Tribe of Florida as an example of how tribes can successfully manage and retain authority over the heritage of their respective cultures. With Native voices front and center, this book demonstrates ways THPOs can work within federal and tribal governments to build capacity and uphold tribal values--core principles of a strong tribal historic preservation program. The authors also offer readers one of the first attempts to document Native perspectives on the archaeology of native populations.

A Good Country

A Good Country PDF Author: Laleh Khadivi
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1632865858
Category : Fiction
Languages : en
Pages : 259

Book Description
A "powerful" (NYT) timely novel about the radicalization of a Muslim teen in California--about where identity truly lies and how we find it. Laguna Beach, California, 2011. Alireza Courdee, a 16-year-old straight-A student and chemistry whiz, takes his first hit of pot. In as long as it takes to inhale and exhale, he is transformed from the high-achieving son of Iranian immigrants into a happy-go-lucky stoner. He loses his virginity, takes up surfing, and sneaks away to all-night raves. For the first time, Reza--now Rez--feels like an American teen. Life is smooth; even lying to his strict parents comes easily. But then he changes again, falling out with the bad-boy surfers and in with a group of kids more awake to the world around them, who share his background, and whose ideas fill him with a very different sense of purpose. Within a year, Reza and his girlfriend are making their way to Syria to be part of a Muslim nation rising from the ashes of the civil war. Timely, nuanced, and emotionally forceful, A Good Country is a gorgeous meditation on modern life, religious radicalization, and a young man caught among vastly different worlds. What we are left with at the dramatic end is not an assessment of good or evil, East versus West, but a lingering question that applies to all modern souls: Do we decide how to live, or is our life decided for us?
