The Ascension of the Messiah in Lukan Christology

The Ascension of the Messiah in Lukan Christology PDF Author: Arie W. Zwiep
Publisher: BRILL
ISBN: 9004267336
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 309

Book Description
Building on the form-critical assessment of the Lukan ascension story (LK 24:50-53; Acts 1:1-12) as a rapture story, and motivated by the consideration that the 'monotheistic principle' almost inevitably must have led to a reestimate of the meaning and function of rapture in comparison with heathen rapture stories (immortalisation and deification!), the present study seeks to investigate the Lukan ascension story in the light of the first-century Jewish rapture traditions (Enoch, Elijah, Moses, Baruch, Ezra, etc.). The author argues that first-century Judaism provides a more plausible horizon of understanding for the ascension story than the Graeco-Roman rapture tradition, and that Luke develops his 'rapture christology' not as a reinterpretation of the primitive exaltation kerygma (G. Lohfink), but as a response to the eschatological question, i.e. the delay of the parousia, so as to secure the unity of salvation history.

The Law and the Knowledge of Good and Evil

The Law and the Knowledge of Good and Evil PDF Author: Chris A. Vlachos
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725244039
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 312

Book Description
First Corinthians 15:56, "The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law," is both puzzling and neglected. It is puzzling since there appears to be no precursor in 1 Corinthians to the law-critical statement found there. It is neglected because of its size. Nevertheless, the short verse offers the opportunity to analyze in a rudimentary state Paul's law-sin notion that appears full-blown in Romans, and the absence of a polemical setting allows scholars to examine a law-critical statement issued during a polemical lull. In The Law and Knowledge of Good and Evil, Vlachos weighs attempts to explain the presence of 1 Cor 15:56 in 1 Corinthians and argues that the Genesis Fall narrative, where the tempter plied his seductions by way of the commandment, provides the theological substructure to Paul's understanding of the law's provocation of sin. In doing so, Vlachos contends that Paul reaches the historical high water mark of his polemic against the salvific efficacy of the law by locating a law-sin nexus in Eden, and, contrary to some recent perspectives on Paul, he argues that the edenically informed axiom in 1 Cor 15:56 suggests that Paul's fundamental concern with the law was rooted in primordial rather than ethnic soil. While studies of Paul and the law have tended to bypass Eden, The Law and Knowledge of Good and Evil breaks ground by moving the argument beyond Second Temple Judaism to the Genesis Fall account, where the prohibition against partaking of the knowledge of good and evil led to the knowledge of sin.

Infection Control in the Built Environment

Infection Control in the Built Environment PDF Author: Great Britain. Department of Health. Estates and Facilities Division
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780113229680
Category : Health facilities
Languages : en
Pages : 45

Book Description
This HBN supersedes and replaces all versions of Health Facilities Note 30 (HFN30). It discusses the various stages of a capital build project from initial concept through to postproject evaluation and highlights the major infection prevention and control (IPC) issues and risks that need to be addressed at each particular stage to achieve designed-in IPC. The principles of this guidance can be applied to all healthcare facilities, mental health settings are included. The most important points raised by the document are the need: for an awareness of appropriate Health Building Notes and Health Technical Memoranda pertinent to new build or refurbishment projects; for timely, comprehensive and collaborative partnership between all parties to achieve IPC goals specific to each construction project; for all stakeholders to understand the basic principles of 'designed-in' IPC; to understand and assess the risks of infection relating to construction projects and the physical environment; for robust project management in relation to IPC considerations for all new-build and refurbishment projects; for a system of signing-off plans and meeting notes to include all participating parties including the IPC team; for quality control throughout the duration of the construction project; to regularly consult with and update all relevant parties throughout the project; to continually monitor developments.

The Post-Mortem Vindication of Jesus in the Sayings Gospel Q

The Post-Mortem Vindication of Jesus in the Sayings Gospel Q PDF Author: Daniel A. Smith
Publisher: A&C Black
ISBN: 0567109879
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 225

Book Description
Q 13:34-35, the Jerusalem Logion, aligns the rejection of the speaker by Jerusalem both with the abandonment of Jerusalem's house and with the future invisibility and return of the speaker: 'You will not see me until you say, Blessed is the Coming One in the name of the Lord' (13:35b). The coincidence of not seeing language with a reference to a future coming is reminiscent of the connection, in Jewish literature especially, between the assumption and eschatological function. The book proposes that this reference to Jesus' assumption is a clue to how Q conceives of the post-mortem vindication of Jesus, since numerous Q sayings presuppose a knowledge of Jesus' death. In support of this, the book argues that in Hellenistic Jewish writings assumption was not always considered to be an escape from death (as in the biblical instances of Enoch and Elijah), but could happen at or after death, as was more clearly the case in Greek thought. Such a strategy of vindication is necessary for Q because it evidences a belief in Jesus' ongoing existence and future return as the Son of Man, and because resurrection though a feature of Q's eschatology is not individually applied to Jesus. A similar view is presupposed by the pre-Markan empty tomb tradition, which describes the disappearance of Jesus' body but narrates neither the resurrection itself nor an appearance of the risen Jesus. The book also draws out implications of the thesis for the place of the Sayings Gospel Q within the early Christian movements, particularly vis-vis the vindication of Jesus.
