Book Description
The Instant New York Times Bestseller “Engaging and entertaining… a glimpse of the economy of the future.” —Tim Wu, New York Times Book Review From the New York Times bestselling author of The Signal and the Noise, the definitive guide to our era of risk—and the players raising the stakes In the bestselling The Signal and the Noise, Nate Silver showed how forecasting would define the age of Big Data. Now, in this timely and riveting new book, Silver investigates “the River,” the community of like-minded people whose mastery of risk allows them to shape—and dominate—so much of modern life. These professional risk-takers—poker players and hedge fund managers, crypto true believers and blue-chip art collectors—can teach us much about navigating the uncertainty of the twenty-first century. By immersing himself in the worlds of Doyle Brunson, Peter Thiel, Sam Bankman-Fried, Sam Altman, and many others, Silver offers insight into a range of issues that affect us all, from the frontiers of finance to the future of AI. Most of us don’t have traits commonly found in the River: high tolerance for risk, appreciation of uncertainty, affinity for numbers—paired with an instinctive distrust of conventional wisdom and a competitive drive so intense it can border on irrational. For those in the River, complexity is baked in, and the work is how to navigate it. People in the River have increasing amounts of wealth and power in our society, and understanding their mindset—and the flaws in their thinking— is key to understanding what drives technology and the global economy today. Taking us behind the scenes from casinos to venture capital firms, and from the FTX inner sanctum to meetings of the effective altruism movement, On the Edge is a deeply reported, all-access journey into a hidden world of power brokers and risk-takers.

Book Description
Contemporary financial markets have been characterized by sociocultural phenomena such as "meme stocks", the Gamestop short squeeze, and "You Only Live Once (YOLO) trading". These are movements led by small-scale retail investors banding together to participate forcefully in financial markets through decentralized but coordinated actions. This book deploys many different subdisciplines to explore the recent ‘power grabbing’ of retail investors and the online environment that enables them to join the ranks of major financial players, and participate in contemporary capitalism. It offers multiple perspectives on the genesis, role, motivations, power, and future prospects of retail investors as a force in contemporary financial markets. Drawing upon the insights of authors hailing from many different countries, the book frames YOLO capitalism through numerous angles that help to explain the context and the importance of activist retail investors in modern financial markets, and thereby explore the possibilities of a transformed financial future with much wider small-scale participation. The book assesses the potential of online - and other - communities in enabling global coordination in impacting or even driving financial and crypto markets, and the challenges that come with it and weighs the competing narratives both positive and negative regarding YOLO capitalism. It strikes a balanced assessment of their legal, cultural, behavioural, economic, and political roles in modern finance. This book will be of interest to a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary audience of scholars in financial markets, financial regulation, political economy, public administration, macroeconomics, corporate governance, and the philosophy and the sociology of finance.

Pages : 337

Book Description
Now in paperback. The personally harrowing and medically enthralling story of a family's struggle to save a child from a deadly immune deficiency. A journey through the deepest valleys and highest peaks of parenting. When a two-month-old baby falls ill, his apparently ordinary symptoms turn out to signal a rare and lethal immune deficiency. For parents Miguel Sancho and Felicia Morton, the discovery that their son, Sebastian, has chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) upends their lives and leaves the family with few options, all of them terrifying. With Sebastian at constant risk of deadly infection, they spend the next six years in some degree of self-quarantine, with all its attendant anxieties and stressors, as they struggle to keep their son alive, their marriage intact, and themselves sane. The quest for a cure leads them into the alternate universe of the rare-disease community, and to the cutting edge of modern medicine, as their personal crises send them fumbling through various modalities of self-help, including faith, therapy, and meditation. With brutal honesty, Sancho describes how his struggles derail his career, put his marriage on life support, get his family evicted from a Ronald McDonald House, and ruin a Make-A-Wish trip. Sancho's riveting tale of the diagnosis and treatment of his son's illness takes us deep inside the workings of the immune system, and into the radically innovative treatment used to repair it. Ultimately Sebastian is saved with a stem cell transplant using discarded umbilical cord blood, a groundbreaking technique pioneered and practiced by the medical wizards at Duke University Hospital. Deeply researched and darkly humorous, this is a wrenching tale with a triumphant ending.

The Myth and Propaganda of Black Buying Power

The Myth and Propaganda of Black Buying Power PDF Author: Jared A. Ball
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031265491
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 147

Book Description
The second edition of this Palgrave Pivot offers a history of and proof against claims of "buying power" and the impact this myth has had on understanding media, race, class and economics in the United States. For generations Black people have been told they have what is now said to be more than one trillion dollars of "buying power," and this book argues that commentators have misused this claim largely to blame Black communities for their own poverty based on squandered economic opportunity. This book exposes the claim as both a marketing strategy and myth, while also showing how that myth functions simultaneously as a case study for propaganda and commercial media coverage of economics. In sum, while “buying power” is indeed an economic and marketing phrase applied to any number of racial, ethnic, religious, gender, age or group of consumers, it has a specific application to Black America. A new foreword by Dr. Darrick Hamilton, Henry Cohen Professor of Economics and Urban Policy at the New School (in New York, USA), and a new chapter on cryptocurrencies are included in this new edition.

BLOCKCHAIN FUNDAMENTALS CORE AND CONCEPTS AND DECENTRALIZED LEDGER TECHNOLOGY

BLOCKCHAIN FUNDAMENTALS CORE AND CONCEPTS AND DECENTRALIZED LEDGER TECHNOLOGY PDF Author: Mr. Gunawan Widjaja

Pages : 212

Book Description
Let's take a look at the beginnings of the technology that is now known as blockchain before delving into the specifics of how the blockchain works and the various other components of it. In 1991, a team of academic academics was the first to present the intellectual framework that underpins blockchain technology. The concept was first conceived for the purpose of time-stamping digital documents in such a way that it would be impossible to retroactively change their dates afterward. Despite this, the concept was mostly ignored until Satoshi Nakamoto brought it up once more in the white paper he published. It is possible that this is the first time in the history of the world that the creator of a game-changing technology has chosen to remain fully nameless. An unknown individual or group is said to be behind the creation of the first blockchain, which was Bitcoin. This person or group goes by the name Satoshi Nakamoto. 2009 marked the year when Bitcoin became the world's first cryptocurrency to use a blockchain. In the years that followed, bitcoin gained traction, and the technology that it was based on went on to gain an even greater following. Therefore, the uncertainty and lack of clarity among people began at the very beginning of the phenomenon itself; a product and the terminology associated with it became viral before the technology that underpinned it. And when the blockchain exhibited its true potential, people were attempting to associate it with the terminology of bitcoin, which resulted in a complete misunderstanding and confusion on everyone's part. On the other hand, you should begin with blockchain and work your way up to trying to grasp bitcoin. Before delving further into the particulars of the technology, there is another issue that has to be answered first. In order to label a piece of technology as revolutionary, it must, of course, offer significant advantages over previously existing technologies. The following are some advantages that blockchain technology has over pre-existing solutions in various industries: What is Blockchain? When we look at the data structure, data distribution, data validation (which refers to the authentication of a piece of data in blockchain), and other associated terminology of blockchain, we can get a good understanding of the characteristics. IBM defines blockchain as a shared and distributed ledger that makes it easier to record transactions and keep track of assets inside a network. Blockchain was developed by the company IBM. The asset might be a tangible one such as a piece of real estate, a house, or a vehicle, or it could be an intangible one such as digital money, the rights to intellectual property, or something similar. In its most basic form, it takes care of storing data and tracking where it goes throughout a decentralised network. Let's check at its specifics. On a P2P network, it functions as either a decentralised database or a public register that maintains information on assets and the transactions involving those assets. The use of encryption will be employed to ensure the safety of each transaction, and at some point in the future, the history of all transactions will be compiled into blocks of data and stored away. After that, the blocks are protected against alteration and connected to one another through the use of cryptography. The entirety of the procedure will result in the production of an unalterable and unfalsifiable record of the transactions that took place throughout the network. In addition to this, blocks of records are duplicated to all of the computers that are participating in the network, making it possible for everyone to have access to it. The fact that blockchain can store any form of asset together with facts about its ownership, a history of that ownership, and the placement of assets within the network is one of the technology's most significant advantages. Whether it be the virtual currency bitcoin or any other type of digital asset such as a certificate, personal information, a contract, title of ownership of intellectual property, or even the physical things themselves, digital assets may be used to store and transfer value. The most significant aspect of Blockchain is its ability to enable the creation of a shared reality between entities that cannot be trusted. That is to say that none of these participating nodes in the network are required to know or trust one another because each node possesses the capability to independently monitor and validate the chain. It's a cruel twist of fate that participants' inherent mistrust of one another is what ultimately ensures the blockchain's integrity and veracity.
