Biomaterials for Clinical Applications

Biomaterials for Clinical Applications PDF Author: Sujata K. Bhatia
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1441969209
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 286

Book Description
Biomaterials for Clinical Applications is organized according to the World Health Organization’s report of the top 11 causes of death worldwide, and lays out opportunities for both biomaterials scientists and physicians to tackle each of these leading contributors to mortality. The introductory chapter discusses the global burden of disease. Each of the subsequent eleven chapters focuses on a specific disease process, beginning with the leading cause of death worldwide, cardiovascular disease. The chapters start with describing diseases where clinical needs are most pressing, and then envisions how biomaterials can be designed to address these needs, instead of the more technologically centered approached favored by most books in the field. This book, then, should appeal to chemical engineers and bioengineers who are designing new biomaterials for drug delivery and vaccine delivery, as well as tissue engineering.

Nutrition and HIV

Nutrition and HIV PDF Author: Saurabh Mehta
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351058185
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
The world continues to lose more than a million lives each year to the HIV epidemic, and nearly two million individuals were infected with HIV in 2017 alone. The new Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by countries of the United Nations in September 2015, include a commitment to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Considerable emphasis on prevention of new infections and treatment of those living with HIV will be needed to make this goal achievable. With nearly 37 million people now living with HIV, it is a communicable disease that behaves like a noncommunicable disease. Nutritional management is integral to comprehensive HIV care and treatment. Improved nutritional status and weight gain can increase recovery and strength of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, improve dietary diversity and caloric intake, and improve quality of life. This book highlights evidence-based research linking nutrition and HIV and identifies research gaps to inform the development of guidelines and policies for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. A comprehensive approach that includes nutritional interventions is likely to maximize the benefit of antiretroviral therapy in preventing HIV disease progression and other adverse outcomes in HIV-infected men and women. Modification of nutritional status has been shown to enhance the quality of life of those suffering HIV/AIDS, both physically in terms of improved body mass index and immunological markers, and psychologically, by improving symptoms of depression. While the primary focus for those infected should remain on antiretroviral treatment and increasing its availability and coverage, improvement of nutritional status plays a complementary role in the management of HIV infection.

Weir's Handbook of Experimental Immunology, 4 Volume Set

Weir's Handbook of Experimental Immunology, 4 Volume Set PDF Author: L. A. Herzenberg
Publisher: Wiley-Blackwell
ISBN: 9780865424210
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 2426

Book Description
The new fifth edition of the highly acclaimed Handbook of Experimental Immunology has been completely restructured and extensively revised to reflect the considerable increase in the importance of immunology as a research discipline. Produced in four volumes (available for separate purchase) or as a set, the text provides a complete reference, including experimental protocols and explications of general principles. Each section contains overviews and chapters describing the background and technical detail of a comprehensive range of immunological procedures in immunochemistry, cellular immunology, genetics and molecular immunology, and the application of immunological methods. All material available within the four-volume text can be found on this new dual-platform CD-ROM, including the extended indexing and cross-referencing possible with electronic media. The CD-ROM also comprises several of the lengthy and highly informative contributions, which were abridged in the printed version. Also included are additional notes and illustrations, which extend the scope of the material, and a statistical software package, which complements the statistical section of the printed version.

Idiotypes in Medicine: Autoimmunity, Infection and Cancer

Idiotypes in Medicine: Autoimmunity, Infection and Cancer PDF Author: R.C. Kennedy
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080534430
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 557

Endothelial Dysfunction

Endothelial Dysfunction PDF Author: Helena Lenasi
Publisher: BoD – Books on Demand
ISBN: 1789842530
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 432

Book Description
The endothelium enables communication between blood and tissues and is actively involved in cardiovascular homeostasis. Endothelial dysfunction has been recognized as an early step in the development of cardiovascular diseases: respectively, endothelium represents a potential therapeutic niche with multiple targets. The purpose of the book is to point out some recent findings of endothelial physiology and pathophysiology emphasizing various aspects of endothelial dysfunction connected to the body's internal and external environment. While basic features of the endothelium are presented in an introductory chapter, the authors of the following 17 chapters have provided extensive insight into some selected topics of endothelial (dys)function. The book would hopefully be useful for anyone interested in recapitulating endothelial (patho)physiology and expanding knowledge of molecular mechanisms involved in endothelial dysfunction, relevant also for further clinical investigations.
