Book Description
Excerpt from History Topsfield Massachusetts For over forty years the author collected material relating to Topsfield with the intention of publishing a comprehensive history of the town. At the time of his death he had outlined the work and written many of the chapters. It has been my privilege to carry on the work with the assistance of a group of w.p.a. Workers and Miss Ruth H. Allen who has written the remaining chapters. I have edited the manuscript, pre pared the index and read the proofs. Much information was gleaned from the Probate and Quart erly Court Records of Essex County, and the lists of soldiers in the French and Indian wars and the Revolution were care fully checked with the rolls in the Massachusetts State Archives. It is hoped that it may be possible at some future time to print the chapters on houses and lands and on the families of Topsfield which have been so carefully prepared. Candy Cummings

Candy Cummings PDF Author: Stephen Robert Katz
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476644594
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 249

Book Description
One of the greatest pitchers of his era, William Arthur "Candy" Cummings was born in 1848, when baseball was in its infancy. In the 1870s, Candy's invention, the curveball, played a transformative role and earned him a place in the Hall of Fame. Drawing on extensive research, this first full-length biography traces Candy's New England heritage and chronicles his rise to the top, from pitching for amateur teams in mid-1860s Brooklyn to playing in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players--the first major league--and then the newly-formed National League. A critical examination of the evidence and competing claims reveals that Cummings was, indeed, the originator of the curveball.

Connecting Maine's Capitals by Stagecoach

Connecting Maine's Capitals by Stagecoach PDF Author: Leland J. Hanchett, Jr.
Publisher: Pine Rim Publishing LLC
ISBN: 0692941355
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
For our third book on stagecoach history, we have chosen the stage routes connecting Maine's three capitals, Boston, Portland and Augusta. Preceding stagecoach travel in the west by at least forty years, travel in the east started in the late 18th century and was in full swing until the railroads took over in the 1840s. Subjects covered include an overview of why Maine's capital moved from Boston to Portland and finally to Augusta; the building of the stage roads; formation of the stage lines; taverns and inns along the way and personal accounts of travel and experiences on the stage routes. Over 100 black and white images coupled with twenty-two color photos provide a unique glimpse into Maine's past.
