Book Description
Excerpt from George Washington, Vol. 1 of 2 In one respect Washington has lost in definition. His name and renown are taken for granted, and his individuality has thus lost. He is mentioned, but his opinions are not studied, and the words of his writings have been forgotten. The tribute to his memory in tended in these volumes must be found in a close de pendence upon his letters and State papers. It is not as a soldier or as a President that I have sought to draw him nor do I wish to write a history of the times to show Washington's relations to his contemporaries. I have endeavored to make the man write his own biography, using his own phrases and words to illustrate his attitude towards public questions and public char acters. I cannot but feel that much more could have been included in this plan, but any modification of the scheme would have led me into too wide a field for the limits set to these volumes. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Washington, Vol. 1 of 2: The Evergreen State From Early Dawn to Daylight; With Portraits and Biographies Firstly, we propose, for the better enlightenment of the reader of this, our story of Washington, to reopen, with some little ceremony and minuteness of' description, the three great doors whose long-sealed portals, thanks to the brave energy of Columbus, Balboa, and Magellan, gave, in the sequence of their successive discoveries, three gateways through which the civiliza. Tion of the world poured in to reach and occupy, first, the eastern, then the western shores of the South American conti nent and then, in the fulness of time, those of our own north west coasts. To this will naturally follow, as briefly as may be, some notice of later voyages and attempts, more or less successful, to exam ine and settle our own western boundary, not only the explora tions of Spain, but of those who emulated her - the Russian, the Dutch, the English, and American navigators whose united efforts mapped out our geography of to-day. Book Description
Excerpt from A Life of Washington, Vol. 1 of 2 In compiling this work, the writer has availed himself of all the sources of information within his reach and though possessed of materials for a much larger one, has compressed them in a man ner which, it is hoped, will bring it within the reach of those to whom it is peculiarly addressed. Much of the information concerning the private life and habits of Washington, was derived from the information of his contemporaries then living, but most of them now no more, and from the means afforded by the present most estimable lady who is now in possession of Mount Vernon. Book Description
Excerpt from Washington, Vol. 1: The Capital City and Its Part in the History of the Nation The writer who undertakes to tell the story of Washington confronts a task the like of which is presented by none of its sister cities. The federal capital during its hundred years of existence has been the political centre of the republic, the birthplace of parties and legislation, the training-ground and forum of one generation after another of public men. Indeed, from its founding until the present time it has been the brain and heart of the nation. This fact has been kept constantly in mind in the writing of the present work, and, while sketching the rise of Washington from a wilderness hamlet to one of the most beautiful capitals in the world, the author has also attempted adequately to portray the political growth and development of the republic. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of George Washington, Vol. 1 of 2: Commander in Chief of the American Forces, During the War Which Established the Independence of His Country, and First President of the United States The period during which he lived, and acted a conspicuous part in American affairs, was the most interesting of American history. The war of our revolution, the very instructive interval between its termina tion and the adoption of our present constitution, the organization of the new government, and the principles which were developed in its first operation, form great epochs, claiming the attention not only of every statesman, but of every American unwilling to remain ignorant of the history of his country, and the character of his countrymen. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of General Washington, First President of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 It will be perceived that, on these accounts, the following Biography can lay claim, only in a limited degree, to the character of an original work. The writer feels, that in the manner of its construction, he has done nothing to promote his own reputation as an author. In withdrawing, in his own person, as much as possible, from view, and leaving his hero in exclusive possession of the stage, he has acted, not only from a sense of duty to his subject, in allowing him to relate his own history, but also from a conviction, that, where the requisite materials exist, works of this sort ought always to be constructed upon such a plan. The excellence of Biography consists, in keeping the author out of sight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
