Book Description
Excerpt from History of the United States, Vol. 1 of 4 Dear People op the United States: - By this, my Preface, I offer to you a New History of your country - and mine. The work is presented in the form of an abridged narrative. My reasons for such a venture are brief, but chief among them is the fact that, to every American citizen some knowledge of the history of his country is indispensable, and the attainment of that knowledge ought to be made easy and delightful. This history is intended for the average American; for the man of business who has neither time nor disposition to plod through ten or twenty volumes of elaborate historical dissertation; for the practical man of the shop, the counter, and the plough. The work is dedicated to the household and the library of the working man. It is inscribed to the father, the mother, the son, and the daughter of the American family. If father, mother, son, and daughter shall love their country better - if they shall understand more clearly and appreciate more fully the founding, progress, and growth of liberty in the New World the author will be abundantly repaid. In the preparation of the work the following objects have been kept in view: I. To give an accurate and spirited Narrative of the principal events in our National history from the aboriginal times to the present day. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 IN presenting to the public a new history or the states, the indulgence of the reader is asked to a few preliminary remarks respecting the object had in view in these volumes, and the claims which they have upon the attention of the American people. The one great object ever before me has been to present a truthful, impartial, and readable narrative of the origin, rise, and progress of that mighty Republic which, extending from ocean to ocean, is destined to assume yet higher rank, and to wield larger and larger influence among the family of nations. Having an entire and thorough conviction of the superintending care and control of Divine Providence in our country's affairs; having no ends to gain but those of truth and right having no theories to establish. No partisan views or wishes to gratify I have honestly endeavored to ascertain what the truth is, and then to set it forth as clearly, and as fully, as was possible within the limits to which I was restricted. Mere speculations on historic points, I have avoided; attempts to penetrate or pronounce upon the motives of men and nations, beyond what may be regarded as plainly and fairly deducible from their acts, I have deemed of little value; and, in general, I have preferred to leave the intelligent reader to draw his own con elusion from an impartial presentation of the facts and circumstances of the case. At the same time, in cases of difficulty or doubt, I have carefully and conscientiously sought to compare and sift conflicting accounts, and to arrive at that which seemed to be the nearest approximation to the truth which, probably, under the circumstances, can now be attained. Book Description
Excerpt from The New Complete History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 The discovery of America, in the last decade of the fifteenth century, was the most important secular event in, the history of the world. The revelation of our continents, hitherto unknown to the races of Europe and the East, was destined to afiect not only the material enterprises, but also the intellectual conditions, and ultimately the moral estate, of all mankind. More distinctlv and powerfully than any other enterprise of men or nations did the first knowledge and fame of the Western hemisphere react on the genius and ambitions of man, bearing him on to higher vision and nobler modes of action. Nor has any subse quent achievement of human beings, however great and startling, equaled that marvelous and sublime leap of adventure whereby the vanguard of the Aryan race was first landed on the western shores of the ocean of Atlas.
