Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Trade-Mark "Yale" Issued January, 1914 Linus Yale, senior (fig. I), born in Middletown, Conn., in 1797, but reared in Herkimer County, N. Y., had a natural talent for mechanics which first bore fruit in improvements in various milling devices, but which led him later into designing and making bank locks, which, in those days, were always operated by keys, and usually were of more or less intricate construction. It appears that he started as a lock maker about 1840, and that in 1847 he built, in Newport, N. Y., the substantial stone building, still standing, which ever since has been known locally as the Yale Lock Shop, and which is shown by the accompanying illustration (fig. In that year also he brought out a Yale Bank Lock, the first of the long line of locks destined to bear that trade-name, which was a masterpiece of ingenuity and which won lasting repute for the name Yale as indicative of origin and high quality. Book Description
Picturing Yale celebrates both a university and a photographer. Michael Marsland has been photographing Yale for more than forty years, thirty of them as university photographer, and in that time he has created an unparalleled visual record of the campus. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors alike often see-- or remember-- Yale through his images. This selection of Marsland's photographs captures not just the look but also the spirit of today's Yale. The introductory essay by Jay Gitlin, a member of the History department at Yale for more than thirty years, situates this photographic record within a wider view of the university's history. Together, Marsland and Gitlin deliver an engaging and evocative portrait of this institution.
