From the time of its first engagement, General Grant's first battle of the War of the Rebellion Belmont, Mo., November the 7th 1861, to the Grand Review at Washington at the close of the war, its name and fame was ever prominently before the country. Book Description
Excerpt from History of the 33d Iowa Infantry Volunteer Regiment, 1863-6 In presenting this history of our Regiment to my fellow-soldiers of the 3rd Iowa Infantry, I hope their memories while reading, may be as warm and pleasant as have been mine while writing it. For whatever of omission or error it contains, I have only to say, that the whole was written amidst the very press of editorial and many other duties, and a very great part of it after nine o'clock at night. The work is as well as I could make It under the circumstances. Much of monotony may be ascribed to the sameness of the events to be described; and many omissions may be accounted for by lack of data which others should have furnished, as requested, and as they promised to do. Book Description
Excerpt from Campaigns and Battles of the Twelfth Regiment Iowa Veteran Volunteer Infantry At the first reunion of the 12th Iowa Veteran Volunteer Infantry, held at Manchester, Iowa, April 6, 1880, D. W Reed was elected historian. He was requested to prepare a record of the services of the regiment from its organizating to muster-out, and to include in the record such items as would be of interest to "our children," and the friends of the regiment who were not participants in its campaigns and battles. Realizing that little could be told that would be new or of interest to those comrades who marched and fought with the regiment during the entire service - except as it might serve to revive half-forgotten memories of the past - the historian endeavored to keep in mind the latter part of his instruction and to write for those who may in the future desire to know how the "boys of 61" were equipped; how they made their camps and bivouacs; or how they fought and won their battles. At the regimental reunion at Sioux City, October 8, 1894, the history was reported complete, and the manuscript placed at the disposal of a committee on publication. Since that time the writer has been engaged in a work that has given him opportunity to make a very close study of one of the interesting campaigns of the regiment.
