Significant dates in North Carolina Lutheranism, are 1743, 1773, 1803, 1863, 1918, 1921, and now, 1962. The first German immigrants began to arrive in North Carolina in 1743. By 1747, there were four Lutheran congregations organized in North Carolina; Friedens, Guilford County; St. John's and Zion (organ) in Rowan; and St. John's, in Cabarrus. Historian Conner esti mates that in 1771 there were Lutherans in North Carolina. Dr. W. T. Whitsett observes that, Contrary to the rule with certain other denominations, the Lutherans did not think it necessary to wait for regular ministers in order to begin their church work; they set up their church services upon arrival, and with their duly elected deacons and elders conducted regular religious worship. Gonse crated laymen sponsored these worship services for approximately thirty (30) years before ordained ministers were on the field. Early records of colonization are few, difficult to find, and, when found, meagre in the narrative of facts that we most desire to know. But careful research makes it tolerably certain that the first German settlements in the Piedmont section were made in those localities now known as Rowan and Cabarrus Counties, about the year I747. 3' Saunders' Colonial Records state that, in the year I755, Governor Arthur Dobbs Visited these localities and found twenty two families of Germans and Swiss, who had settled there some seven or eight years previously, that is, about I747.
