In the first of these, the greater degree of subtlety was required; in the second the greater portion of original talent and genius was displayed. The obscure labour of the architect, which precedes the laying the first stone and erecting the shell of his edifice, will frequently be found not less memorable and worthy of record, than all the success and splendour of execution, which are more adapted to awaken the admiration of the many.
