Queensland Lords

Queensland Lords PDF Author: Janet Spillman
Publisher: Boolarong Press
ISBN: 1925236439
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 310

Book Description
Edward and Eliza Lord came to Moreton Bay in 1844, arriving as the remote convict outpost was opened up for free settlement. Members of Lancashire merchant families, they had invested their inheritances in NSW lands and a Sydney merchant firm, just before the drought and crash of 1841. They moved north to rebuild their fortunes, settling at Kangaroo Point before moving to the Darling Downs to start new commercial interests. Although financial success continued to elude them, the Lord family contributed to the settlement of colonial Queensland. Edward and Eliza’s great-great-grand-daughter, Janet Spillman, explores the way Queensland moulded the Lord family’s lives, and the way family members contributed to the colony’s development.

Fettered Frontier

Fettered Frontier PDF Author: Jennifer Harrison
Publisher: Boolarong Press and Brisbane History Group
ISBN: 1922643610
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 206

Book Description
Historian Jennifer Harrison’s latest book Fettered Frontier, Founding the Moreton Bay Settlement 1822–1826, a companion volume to Shackled: Female Convicts at Moreton Bay 1826 –1839 (2016) investigates the struggle to locate and establish an outpost in remote Moreton Bay. She uses original government correspondence, diaries, journals and maps and also examines the many mangled foundation stories from the time of the original site at Redcliffe and its removal to a location on the Brisbane River. The search for the river involved several exploratory voyages, the discovery of convict timber getters who had totally lost their bearings and the helpful local Aboriginal people. The stream, shrouded by mangroves, was finally discovered. A significantly sized waterway, it was appropriately named for Governor Sir Thomas Brisbane as was the campsite on its bank. Much research has concentrated on accurately re-creating economic, climatic and legal back stories together with defining the characters who made the decisions in London, Port Jackson (Sydney) and locally as well as the convicts who undertook the heavy manual work. Happy 200th Birthday, Brisbane — you have come a long way.

Queensland’s Frontier Wars

Queensland’s Frontier Wars PDF Author: Jack Drake
Publisher: Boolarong Press
ISBN: 1925877922
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 498

Book Description
Queensland’s Frontier Wars is an attempt to document the known confrontations between either white settlers or white and native police and First Nations people where deaths were reported. It is now an accepted premise that these confrontations were wars to gain access to the land, because, if not wars, then it was mass murder. No one in Queensland was charged with the murder of First Nations during these confrontations. The book shows the invasion from New South Wales into southern Queensland and the advances from the sea in central and north Queensland. The ‘dispersement’ of the First Nations people from their land was violent and efficient using far superior weaponry. This book adds significantly to the true and uncomfortable history of Queensland.
