Book Description
Excerpt from Talvi's History of the Colonization of America, Vol. 1 of 2 That part of American history which I here present to my countrymen has not as yet been given by any German sufficiently in detail. Edeling is, so far as I know, the only German who has attempted it. But in his time many of the principal sources of information, a knowledge of which alone could impart a just idea of the then existing state of things, had not yet been brought to light; nay, many parts of the history of New England lay buried in complete obscurity; as, for instance, the first periods of the colonization of Providence and Rhode Island. The same might be said of such English historians of America as were accessible in Germany, Neal, Oldmixon, Robertson, &c. I therefore thought, though conscious my powers were inferior to the task, yet aware I was favourably situated with regard to sources of information, that I should be undertaking no useless labour in offering to the world a small portion of the history of a country, which is evidently tending towards a most important part in the great drama of the world. Even in the United States an interest in the history of the fatherland is new. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The History of Colonization, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day When I wish to judge of the spirit and the faults of the administration of Louis XIV, I must go to Canada. Its de formity is there seen as through a microscope. It is the fact, that in the dependency national weakness or strength is most apparent, which gives additional zest to this study; because of it, the subject gains its highest interest; for in the dispo sition of the problems incidental to distant realms the ulti mate destiny of a people may well be said to be presaged. The establishment of new germs of social, civil, and political organization in unexplored regions, and their subsequent growth in importance and influence, must ever be reckoned as most potent in results. How much the more significant this record becomes when the effects of these communities upon the citizens and the institutions of the parent state are considered. Such thoughts, due to a natural interest in the affairs of the day, aroused in the author a desire for detailed knowledge. At that time he was residing in a land where the issue of the utility and propriety of colonial endeavor has been for several years agitating the public mind; so that the Oppor tunity to hear arguments pro and con upon fundamental prin ciples was not lacking. As his examination extended, he found, of course, that a considerable number of volumes rela tive to colonization had been published. European scholars have not neglected this theme, while in the United States distinguished writers have elaborately described the early period of American development. More careful investigation, however, shows that of these treatises almost all are devoted to certain special phases, epochs, or fields of research, are written from the standpoint of some one nation, or are too technical to be available and interesting to the majority of readers. The main object of this book may therefore be stated to be succinctly to supply information of a department of human activity, the progress of which, by reason of its peculiar complexity, it is difficult to trace within a few pages. Book Description
Excerpt from Talvi's History of the Colonization of America, Vol. 2 of 2 Years before, the question had been mooted in Massa chusetts. Did the settlements on the Piscataqua belong to their patent or not And, taken literally, the definition of their northern boundary, three miles north of the Merrimak in its most northerly direction, comprised not only the present New Hampshire, but also a great part of Maine. For the Merrimak descends from the White Mountains, and flows about a hundred and twenty miles southwardsfi when it suddenly turns east and runs towards the huge Atlantic in a somewhat northerly direction. This latter part was all that was known to the givers of the patent, and consequently that which they alluded to in the letter of possession. But the fathers of Massachusetts, inclined to give to this an extension of meaning which greatly enlarged their territory, had already planted separate colonies, ten and even twenty miles eastward of the Merrimak, and con sequently accepted as their due the submission of the Piscataqua settlers. When, some time previously, deputies had been obliged to investigate the disposition of the people, and establish peace among the authorities and churches, commissioners were formally sent off to the settlements there, in order, in conjunction with some select men, to call together the people, to take from them the oath of fealty, and establish quarterly courts after the pattern of theother distant subordinate colonies. Book Description
Excerpt from The American Colonies, Vol. 1: 1583-1763 This book is in no sense a history of the English people in their own island. The home life of our country, both before and after the foundation of the colonies and pro tectorates, has been adequately treated by a host of previous writers the colonial field, on the contrary, remains almost untracked, or marked out only in portions, by men who have written with different aims, seen events from different points of view, sketched in different perspective and painted without reference to the relative importance of their small foreground to the rest of the landscape. It has seemed to me that the whole of our imperial career, as it has sprung from one small group of islands, so it can best be treated as one series of connected events - to use a well-worn simile, as a drama which, though its various acts take place in every con tinent and on every ocean, still preserves the fundamental unity that even the constant shifting of the scene does not obscure. The present work is an attempt to carry out that idea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
