Book Description
Excerpt from History of the Colby Family It is a thousand miles they are going; but they will skirt along the shores, and help themselves to supplies. Ext we see our Danish fishermen awkwardly try ing to milk their new cows. Some of the Briton women are giving them instruction. It is a fine grazing country the men have come to; and they seem greatly pleased with their new quarters. Their jollity is rough and boisterous, as they slap each other on the back, or clinch for a tumble. The conversation is quite upon the advantages of owning cattle, the happy life of one who is both a fisher? Man and a herdsman. They seem pleased to settle into this quiet life, and abandon their desultory warfares. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Genealogy of the Descendants of Abraham Colby and Elizabeth Blaisdell, His Wife, Who Settled in Bow in 1768 There is an innate desire in all inquiring minds to learn everything that can be obtained of their ancestors, from rec ords and tradition. Owing to the nomadic life of the early settlers of New England, the records of families in many cases are imperfect, the children having been born in different towns, and some were not entered on record anywhere. We now propose to trace the ancestry and descendants of Abraham Colby, born in Amesbury, in 1715. In 1628 and 1629 about three hundred. Puritans from England had settled in Salem and Charlestown.. In July, 1630, about fifteen hundred more arrived, under the lead of John Winthrop, and settled on the peninsula they named Boston. Among this last arrival was Anthony Colby, from the east coast of England; he had espoused the Puritan faith and was No. 93 on the list of church members. In 1632 we find him in Cambridge, where he married Susanna, prob ably a_ daughter of William Sargent; in 1634 he removed to Salisbury, Mass; in 1647 he sold his house and two-acre lot to William Sargent, a seaman, and removed west of the Powow river, that separates Salisbury from Amesbury, where in 1658 he had sixty acres of land given him, and in 1660 his son John had forty, and a town lot for his son John, west of the pond.
