It will not be necessary to publish another vol ume of the history for some years; and in the meantime the work may be taken up by others and our connection with this department may cease. We therefore take this occasion to say that though the work has been a perplexing one, and the. Care and responsibility of it have weighed heavily upon our minds at times, we have taken pleasure in preparing these volumes; and we are not only pleased but surprised that we have received so little adverse criticism on the work done. We are conscious, however, that our work has not been perfect. We have Often been perplexed amid the con fusion of dates and relation of events to get at the facts. We have understood it to be our duty to chronicle events as they occurred without reference to whom they reflected upon or justified.
