Medical student turned professional soldier David S. Stanley offered forty years of service to his country on the western frontier and during the Civil War. It pitted Braxton Bragg's Army of Tennessee against William S. Rosecrans's Army of the Cumberland and resulted in more than 34,500 casualties.
