Excerpt from History of Portage County, Wisconsin: Read at the Centennial Celebration, Held at the City of Stevens Point, July 4th, 1876 For several years previous, uneasiness had existed in regard to the location of the seat ot'justice at Plover, the plea being that it should be at the business center of the county, which was Stevens Point. Frequent diseussions and agitations of the matter ensued; finally it was referred to the Legislature, which in 1867 passed an act requiring a vote of the people to settle the question. The vote was had, and carried in favor o'f Stevens Point, and the county seat was removed in 1869.
