Book Description
Excerpt from History of Journalism in San Francisco, Vol. 1: Foreign Journalism Since it is impossible to construct a linotype for the Chinese ideographs without simplifica tion, all the newspapers are set by hand. The type is imported from China; the compositors are trained in America. The/typecases are ten times as large as American cases, and are ar ranged by families or root characters, so that type-setting is a tedious and difficult job re quiring a good memory and strong legs. An aver age compositor can set six hundred and fifty words an hour if he can read the roughly serib bled copy. To Americans it is amazing to see the compositors run up and down between the type cases picking up characters practically without looking. Typographical errors are few, and less serious in their consequences than certain clas sic howlers in the American press, because ideo graphs are less precise than words.
