Book Description
Excerpt from History of Ireland: From the Earliest Times to the Year 1547 Some people may be disposed to ask if there were real need of a new History of Ireland, seeing that there are so many already in the hands of the public. Yet it is difficult, if not impossible, to find a really good history of our country - what might be fairly described as an all-round good history - full, accurate, well-written and impartial. If the Rev. Mr. D'Alton has not yet accomplished this task, he has certainly made a praiseworthy beginning. This is the first volume of what is intended to be a three volume work, giving a complete history of Ireland from its remotest origins down to our own time. It is an ambitious task, which cannot be accomplished without much learning, courage and perseverance. There are, perhaps, some who might think it would have been wiser for Father D'Alton to have devoted himself to writing a complete history of his native Province or his native Diocese, which he is certainly well qualified to do. We earnestly hope that he may be induced to undertake such a work hereafter, for the first volume of this general history gives evidence that he possesses many of the most essential qualities of an historical writer. His style is easy and limpid; in description, as well as in narration, he is vivid and frequently picturesque; he possesses the critical faculty in a high degree, and holds the scales of historical justice with an even hand. Moreover, he is a painstaking writer in verifying his authorities; he has the great advantage of a good knowledge of the Gaelic tongue, which enables him to consult for himself the original sources of our earlier history; and he has not failed to utilise all the State Papers and other official documents, which the nineteenth century has produced in such profusion. Book Description
Excerpt from History of Ireland, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day, Vol. 3: 1547 to 1649 The period covered by Volume II was for Ireland a period of storm and struggle and suffering. The strife of race had become intensified and embittered by a strife of religion, for England had definitely cut herself off from Rome, and had even become one of the great champions of Protestantism, while Ireland still clung to the Catholic faith. Religious toleration had then made little progress. Neither France nor Spain was willing to tolerate any religion but Catholicism, and, in consequence, history has to condemn the horrors of the Inquisition, and the banishment of the Huguenots. Nor would England allow her subjects to be anything but Protestants. Even the non-conforming Protestants laboured under disabilities; but the Catholics, above all, were trampled on and oppressed. Their attachment to Rome was held to be inconsistent with being loyal subjects; and for such dis loyalty no punishment was too severe. Without making allow ance for difference of racial temperament, the Englishmen of that time, as previously, thought that what was good for England was also good for Ireland. They regarded Irish customs as rude, the Irish language as a barbarous tongue, and the Irishman's religionficatholicity - as superstition and idolatry. The people who clung to these deserved little mercy, and often got neither mercy nor justice; they were deemed unworthy of getting the status of English subjects, as they were unworthy to be left in possession of their lands. And hence the Plantation of Ulster, the attempted confiscations of Strafford, the savageries of Crom well, and the horrors of the penal laws.
