Book Description
Excerpt from History of Dogma, Vol. 5 There does not yet exist a recognised method for presenting the History of Dogma of the Medieval and more modern period. There is no agreement either as to the extent or treat ment of our material, and the greatest confusion prevails as to the goal to be aimed at. The end and aim, the method and course adopted in the present text-book, were clearly indicated in the introduction to the first volume. I have seen no reason to make any change in carrying out the work. But however definite may be our conception of the task involved in our branch of study, the immense theological material presented by the Middle Ages, and the uncertainty as to what was Dogma at that time, make selection in many places an experiment. I may not hope that the experiment has always been successful. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Not illustrated. 1899 edition. Excerpt: ... independent of human agency. Augustine subordinated the notions of the Church and Sacraments to the spiritual doctrine of God, Christ, the gospel, faith and love, as far as that was at all possible about A.D. 400. 3. The Pelagian Controversy. The Doctrine of Grace and Sin. Augustine's doctrine of grace and sin was constructed independently of the Pelagian controversy. It can be said that his doctrine of grace, in so far as it was a doctrine of God, was complete as early as A.D. 387; but it was not, in its application to Bible history, or to the problem of conversion and sanctification (in the Church), before the beginning of the fifth century. It can also be shown that he was at all times slightly influenced by the popular Catholic view, and this all the more as he was not capable of drawing the whole consequences of his...
