This study represents a serious challenge to conventional thinking in contemporary comparative systems, and the economics of socialism. It disputes the commonly accepted view of both the nature of the 'socialist calculation debate' of the 1930s and the lessons to be derived from it. Whereas many socialist and capitalist participants to the debate tended to talk in polar terms of central planning versus the market, the chief result of the whole controversy has been that the Neoclassical 'market-socialist' position is usually taken to represent a successful synthesis of planning with markets, a synthesis which almost completely dominates contemporary work in comparative economic systems. The author argues in fact that the famous debate has been largely misunderstood. His revisionist interpretation argues that it can no longer be viewed as a dated battle between extreme positions that have now become comfortably reconciled. Rather, the lesson is that planning and markets are fundamentally alternative co-ordination mechanisms and that the attempt to combine them tends to subvert the operation of each.

His contribution to the socialist calculation debates was difficult, to interpret for modern information theorists and mechanism design theorists. In this regard, many theorists have misunderstood Hayek ́s contribution to the socialist calculation debate until today. Therefore, the question still arises: Did modern theorists really misunderstand Hayek ́s insight? The answer to this question can be found by understanding Professor Caldwell’s arguments in his paper just mentioned above and various studies referring to the discourse of the calculation debates. In the paper Hayek and Socialism, Professor Caldwell analyzes Hayek ́s participation in the socialist calculation debate from the 1930s and 1940s. Furthermore, he reviews the new debate on market socialism. The particularity was that he considers the intellectual environment in which Hayek’s thought was evolved. Hayek was involved in a variety of discussions with advocates for the market socialism such as Lange and Lerner. One of his essential contributions to the calculation debates was published in Collectivist Economic Planning and includes a series of essays like Individualism and Economic Order, Economic and Knowledge, The Use of Knowledge in Society and The Meaning of Competition. In general, they contain Hayek ́s explanation for the failure of the market socialism and further throw light on difficulties caused by state interventionism that still exist today.

The failure of command central planning in the twentieth century has led to a general disillusionment within the socialist movement worldwide. Some alternatives to capitalism have been proposed since the end of the Cold War, but none has offered an alternative form of economic calculation. This book explains how modern information technology may be used to implement a new method of economic calculation that could bring an end to capitalism and make socialism possible. In this book, the author critically examines a number of socialist proposals that have been put forward since the end of the Cold War. It is shown that although these proposals have many merits, their inability effectively to incorporate the benefits of information technology into their models has limited their ability to solve the problem of socialist construction. The final section of the book proposes an entirely new model of socialist development, based on a "needs profile" that makes it possible to convert the needs of large numbers of people into data that can be used as a guide for resource allocation. This analysis makes it possible to rethink and carefully specify the conditions necessary for the abolition of capital and consequently the requirements for socialist revolution and, ultimately, communist society. Recently, the historical socialist calculation debate seems to have revived. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, some socialist authors have continued the apparently concluded calculation debate. One of the main ideas behind this revival held by the socialist side is that the latest advances in computation capacity enable central planning, thus overcoming past Austrian arguments based on information and knowledge problems. But beyond this specific argument, what really underlies this new round of the socialist calculation debate is the sign of a paradigm shift in economics. Concretely, a shift from neoclassical economics to the so-called complexity economics. This paper reassesses the socialist calculation debate, including the latest rounds and contributions, which precisely mark the paradigm shift. As it is argued in the article, socialists have refined their position by abandoning neoclassical theory and adopting a complexity perspective on which Austrians have been based from the beginning. Therefore, our analysis attaches even more importance to the socialist calculation debate than it is typically attributed since it sees it as a transcendental event in the history of economics. The calculation debate signifies a clash of paradigms, and its development serves us to indicate how this clash is evolving: the first rounds of the socialist debate can now be seen as a conflict between two competing economic paradigms, and the newest rounds as the consolidation of complexity economics over neoclassical theory. Likewise, this complexity view of the historical event can help determine the conclusion of the debate.
